Nuffield Research Placement

I'm thinking about applying for the Nuffield Research Placement (ideally to do with biology) and I had a few questions about it:
How competitive is it?
How useful is it for getting into university?
Does it provide you with useful skills that employers or universities like?
What should I include in my personal statement for the NRP?

Thank you in advance.
Just found out, its too early, 196 days to be exact, but currently I'm going to write my ps or, well, atleasg try to find out how to via YouTube videos.

When I did it a good 5+ years ago, it was very competitive
It was a big part of my personal statement and it’s probably the reason I managed to get subsequent lab work experience because before entering university, the NRP gave me a lot of experience with experimental techniques, write up, presentation etc
It’s useful to talk about for uni interviews (I didn’t have any when I applied) and can lead to things such as Gold CREST award.
I’m not sure whether they’ll go through with physical placements for 2022 cohort though but even a dry lab project that you can do from home would be beneficial

do you still have your personal statement that you wrote for the nuffield thing? I'm struggling to start it and finding out how to write it, so any ideas would be useful.

I didn't end up applying because of some bad mental health. But I did apply for a sutton trust summer school and got a place in one of them.

I applied for Nuffield but not Sutton trust (bc I thought they would conflict)
I got a placement in Nuffield for data science! it's really interesting.

I applied for both Nuffield and Sutton Trust and got in, I am also doing a data science placement at Strathclyde!

That's great! Instead of Sutton trust, I'm doing a summer school at my university then looking for some bio work experience to help me with my understanding. what's your data science placement about? mine's about diagnosing diseases by voice (there's more to it tho)

I haven't actually been told anything about it. The dates haven't been confirmed yet either. I'm guessing my topic will be something to do with health as that's what my supervisors specialism is

Can I ask do you have to be attending a sixth form college to apply or can you be doing A levels via distance learning & still apply for Nuffield Research opportunity?

You just have to do A-Levels but I would e-mail your regional coordinator just in case.

Hello everyone hope you are all doing well,

So I am looking for people who have undertaken a Nuffield research project and would like to ask them for their opinion, So I don't like public speaking and I have found the word presentation on the timeline for the project. Now I'm stressing out thinking I have to speak to loads of people, also am I expected to know anything before I go in because the project is on cancer cell therapy??? Also will there be any other students like me in the project or am I flying solo? Thanks for all your help

Hi JA03,

1. Were you the only student on the placement in your research team?
2. Did you have to present your findings after also how did it work and did it involve public speaking?
3. Was there anything you struggled with during your placement e.g. was there a particular area you didn't know much about and how did the team help you with that?
4. What was your research on?

Thanks for your help it's really appreciated

1. No. There was one other student with me.
2. I didn’t have to but I did to the department I worked in which was Medical Physics.
3. I struggled with the write up so I asked for help, they shown me what a ‘poster’ looked like and how to write up the report.
4. Data Science into Voice Abnormalities.

Everyone, if they attend the Nuffield event in October, do present their poster but I had to leave almost immediately due to a personal issue.
