The most obvious difference would be the mode of employment/practice. Barristers - self-employed but work from chambers; Solicitors and Legal Executives - under a firm.

Then the differences would lie in the type of work they do. Barristers - advocacy/defence work/some civil cases. Solicitors do far more general practice work (and these will involve fields that society tends to require), such as conveyancing (buying/selling property), wills and trusts, family matters etc. As solicitors tend to work under a firm, their work will be highly influenced by what the firm does. Specialisation is common.

I suggest you do some more Googling, as there will be websites out there that summarise these differences in a more user-friendly way. Then after you get the basics down, look at your document booklet again.
