a level geography exam question

hi! can anyone help me with this question

“Although all countries will suffer from the effects of global warming, it will be the poorest people who, as usual, suffer the most”
To what extent to you agree with this statement?

Im not sure how to do an introduction for it or some points I can discuss
many thanks!
Hi Ruby,

Some suggested points:

1) For both climate mitigation and adaptation, the processes and approaches required require funding which many LICs can't afford

For example, the Canadian Utility firm SaskPower created a carbon capture and storage machine which captures 90% of the emissions from a 110 megawatt coal unit.
This is all very good, but it cost 800 million US dollars to build
Hence why North America has 16 out of 22 operation (or under construction schemes of carbon capture.

2) Largely, the primary sector industries make up a larger part of poorer countries GDP, eg agriculture (THE ONES MOST AFFECTED BY CLIMATE)
this is the sector which is going to be largely affected by the climate crisis.
For example in the Sahel which is facing some of the worst impacts of desertification, 70% of people rely on agriculture for their income
As a result, 1.5 million are affected each year by food insecurity
30% cannot fulfil their food needs

Add a spatial and temporal element:
ie there is lots of nuance within this statement and, for example, different regions WITHIN countries will be affected to different extents. Coastal communities are going to be affected a lot more than those in urban environments. Eg the Sundurbans (The Sundarbans is a coastal landscape is found on the Bay of Bengal: 40% of the Sundarbans was damaged by Cyclone Sidr in 2007 and rising sea levels are increasing the salinity in the forests and swamps. 4 million people live in the Sundarbans, including the city of Khulna and the nearby port of Mongla, which are protected from cyclones by the Sundarbans.)

A BIT MORE NUANCE:
- To oppose this statement perhaps speak about how tropical cyclones are impacting all countries regardless of whether they're developed or not. EG Hurricane Katrina in 2005 hit the US and killed 2,000. People were less worried as they had more trust that the levees surrounding the city would protect them:
Three hundred fifty miles of levees and floodwalls were supposed to protect New Orleans, but they failed and allowed the Ninth Ward and 80% of New Orleans was flooded

Overall I would agree with this statement but do add a bit of nuance and some counter arguments !! good luck
