Andrew

Today Prince Andrew's lawyers reach a new moral high. They are arguing in a New York court that the prince need not respond to Virginia Giuffre's lawsuit against him, alleging battery, rape and emotional trauma, on the basis of an coercive agreement between her and an infamous convicted paedophile.

This isn't just about Prince Andrew. It's about rich older men and their belief that they can behave as abusively as they want to with impunity.

It's also about the shabby reality of the British monarchy. Epstein was photographed at Balmoral where he was a guest. His procurer, Ghislaine Maxwell, was at numerous royal functions and events. They knew her background and circumstances, but she was welcomed into royal circles.

Of course I think highly of the Queen, like most people, but the institution clearly has serious issues. Just look at the harm it's causing to the individuals in it, apart from any other consideration.

the Monarchy is highly resilient and the British people are deeply attached to it, not just to Her Majesty. The "issues" are all in the minds of swivel-eyed twitter™ loons and that.

I must have imagined it all then. Not.

:console: it must be difficult for Americans who have such a stable and uncorrupt leadership to cope with our British system

Like that means we can't comment. I don't recall Brits being reluctant to comment on corruption and misfeasance in US political life.

This little misunderstanding will all be sorted out when Andrew provides the evidence that he cannot sweat :h:

That’s good - I heard they are also working on a quiz about Pizza Express so he can prove he knows his way around the menu

He'll have wanted all the toppings free.
I didn't know this, but apparently the Queen has been meeting Andrew's legal bills. This raises the prospect that if, as now seems increasingly likely, damages are awarded by the court against him, she will be paying that as well.

Not sure the public is going to like that very much.

You do realise that its less than a 10 minute walk from Pizza Express to Andrew’s lawyers.

Go left out of Pizza Express, up Woking High Street, through the Shopping Centre and Blackfords LLP are on Church Street East.

It used to be closer because Pizza Express is just beyond the end of Church Street West but Woking was knocked about a bit when the Martians landed.

I don’t know whether they chose his American lawyers or whether the Prince applied his own massive brain to the task. Anyway, for a New York trial where Andrew is denying liability, someone decided that the best lawyer would be a Hollywood attorney with a JD from the 81st best law school in America who specialises in defending celebrity sex offenders.

I know that if it had been me, I would have wanted a Wall Street lawyer with a Harvard JD who specialises in collisions between supertankers.

I would be very surprised if this argument wins.

The purpose of the agreement wasn’t to give Andrew a right to prevent Guiffre suing him, but rather to give Epstein a right to stop Guiffre suing Andrew. The reason is obvious. If Guiffre had sued Andrew whilst Epstein was alive, there was a real risk that Andrew would claim over against Epstein “you told me that she fancied me, not that you were paying her to sleep with me”.

All Andrew cares about is popping out of his lawyers at lunchtime for an American Hot

His judgement is clearly of the highest sort.

I wonder though about the Palace officialdom, with Her Maj footing the bills, you'd have thought they'd at least want the best lawyers. Perhaps Andy has more of a grip on his poor old mum than we imagine.
For once we are in agreement. Like virtually other British establishment, the monarchy is corrupt and no longer fit for purpose.

Basically they're just tax funded celebrities.

It's a lot more serious than that. Our Head of State is fully supporting her abuser son in litigation on that subject and he is also no doubt being defended by our security services, etc.

Sure. The same is true in the US and presumably elsewhere.

The establishment is run by a bunch of co-opted psychopathic *****s, we've only seen the tip so far.
