Loughborough Applicants and FAQs 2022

Hello!
Welcome to the Loughborough Applicants thread for 2022 for all prospective applicants.
It's also a thread where you can have a general chat and ask any questions you can't find the answer to.

The most common FAQs are answered in the drop downs below, so have a look there first. There are a lot of answers on the University website too, but feel free to ask here if you can't find what you need.

How to Apply

Applications for all undergraduate courses at Loughborough must be made online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). This applies to all UK, EU and international students. For entry in 2022, the application deadline for the majority of undergraduate courses is Wednesday 26 January 2022. Applications received after this date will only be considered if places are still available. Loughborough’s institution name is LBRO, and our institution code is L79.

We accept a very wide range of qualifications for entry to Loughborough. We’d advise you to check the details of the particular course you are interested in as most will specify which subjects are accepted and the grades required.

A-levels You would normally expected to have at least three A levels. In many cases, specific subjects are required, and these will be indicated in the typical offers listed for the course. General Studies is not normally accepted.

GCSEs You would also normally need a minimum of grade 4/C in GCSE English Language and, for most courses, GCSE grade 4/C in Mathematics. A higher level of achievement in specific GCSEs is required for some courses and details of these are included in the relevant course entry. Your overall GCSE grade profile is also considered alongside the specific GCSE requirements listed.

Other Qualifications We also accept the following qualifications: International Baccalaureate Diploma
BTECs
Cambridge Pre-U
Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers
Welsh Baccalaureate
Advanced Diploma/Skills Challenge Certificate
Irish Leaving Certificate
Cambridge Technicals
Access to HE Diploma
Open University
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Core Maths
The London Institute of Banking and Finance (LIBF)
AQA Baccalaureate
European Baccalaureate
French Baccalaureate
German Abitur
Hong Kong DSE
Indian Standard XII Plus many other international qualifications

English Language requirements All students also need to meet the University’s English language requirements. You can find the full details here.

More Information You can find out everything you need to know in more detail on our general entrance requirements webpage.

We welcome applications from International students and we currently have over 1,000 undergraduate international students studying here. We’d advise you to check our English Language requirements especially if English is not your first language. There is also loads of information our international webpages with everything you need to know about coming to Loughborough.

If you’re 21 or over at the time your course starts you’ll be considered a mature student. You can find out more about studying here as a mature student, including the financial assistance that is available to you.

Each year a number of applicants decide to take a gap year and defer entry for 12 months. In most cases, the University encourages this, providing the year is spent pursuing worthwhile activities.

Fees for 2022-23 have been confirmed for UK and International students. Exact course fees can be found on the fees and finance tab of our individual course pages. We’ve put together some information on the funding available to you including scholarships, bursaries and sponsorships which you might find helpful.

After applying

It’s difficult to answer this as there are so many different factors. However, we do reply to everyone, so it's a case of being patient and waiting for your response.

Some courses hold interviews and some don’t, you’d need to check for your specific course. Just because you are invited to an interview it doesn’t mean you are guaranteed an offer.

If you are based in the UK you’ll normally be invited to a visit day for your school/department. You’ll get to see your school/department facilities, speak to staff and students and see the campus. Depending on circumstances, at the time we don't know if this will be virtual or in person.

You are still not guaranteed a place even if you meet the minimum requirements. A lot of our courses are highly competitive.

After Receiving an Offer

If you’re made an offer, you have to reply via UCAS Track. There are certain deadlines in place for doing this and these all depend on when UCAS receive your last decision. For more details about how it works, you can visit the UCAS Replying to your offer webpage which will tell you what everything means and what you need to do.

You can find everything you need to know about our accommodation here.

On results day, you’ll be informed of your results via UCAS Track. If you’ve been successful, you’ll also get an e-mail from us letting you know that you’ve got in. If you haven’t been successful for whatever reason, there is always the option of Clearing (or Adjustment if you’ve done much better than predicted). We can’t say what will be available for 2022 because at this stage we have no idea, but information will be posted just before results.

Hopefully all of this helps a bit towards answering some of your questions!

If there is anything else you need to know - just ask - we're always happy to help

Hello,
I’m looking to apply to Loughborough for politics. I’m a bit confused my the section on the website about contextual offers. If you have a long term health condition/disability declared on your ucas do you qualify for a contextual offer?

Hey, I'm looking to apply for computer science here, and I know that the entry requirements are AAB but my predicted grades are currently ABB in Computer science, Maths, and Physics respectively (And an A in EPQ which is based on CS) and even though those are the 'most popular A-levels studied (and grade achieved)' according to Uniguide (apart from maths and CS swapped around for grades). They're still below the advertised entry requirements. So my question is whether it is even worth applying to Loughborough, is it too competitive for this course for me to not have a chance?
And another thing is I'm serious about sport at University if that would change anything in the application process.
Thank You

Hello!

It's great to hear that you're interested in studying at Loughborough University.

As you already know, our entry requirements for our Computer Science BSc are currently AAB. If you were to successfully apply to us, the most likely scenario would be for you to be made a conditional offer for AAB. If you feel that you're unlikely to get those grades then you could alternatively wait to see if the course enters Clearing - however, last year none of our courses went into Clearing.

You could always apply to see what happens but make sure that you've also applied to universities with ABB requirements so that you have the best possible chance of getting a place somewhere.

We wish you the best of luck with your applications!

Oh so even though my predicted aren't what the requirements are, they can still give me an offer for AAB?
I didn't know that, I will probably still apply then because it will give me the motivation to get those grades.
Thank you

Hi,

Yes, if they want to offer you a place based on your application then they can offer it at AAB with the condition being that you gain those grades. Sometimes your predicted grades can be much lower than what you actually end up with so it's certainly worth applying in case you do better than expected.

Loughborough University is closed for the Christmas break from 24 December to 3 January. We will be back online to answer your questions from 4 January.

We hope that you all have a lovely break, and we wish you all the best for the New Year!
I was wondering if we had to put any further information into our application on UCAS such as which topics we'd be interested in studying? I know Durham asks this for their natural science degree by using abbreviations so I thought I would check as I couldn't find an answer on the website

Hi @lalaboo123

I'm pretty sure you aren't required to specifically state which topics you'd be interested in studying, but I will double check with admissions and get back to you if that's OK. I'm not sure how quickly I'll get a reply, but as soon as I hear I'll let you know.

Leave that one with me.

Hi again @lalaboo123

I've checked with admissions and they've told me:

"We discuss the pathways in the interview process for Natural Sciences, so no further information required in the UCAS application."

Hope that answers your question

Hi
I have a few questions regarding the MBA programme at Lboro.
1. Is placement year offered for this course? When do I decide I want to take it? can I change my decision afterward?
2. Do I have to find an internship myself? Is it usually Full time or part-time?
3. Uni fees for the placement year - Does my scholarship % apply for 2nd yr fees as well?
4. Is there a study abroad trip as part of the MBA programme ?

Thanks in advance

Hi @NDTT
Great to hear you've applied to Lboro
Here's some info on contextual offers and how they are made here https://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/apply/entry-requirements/contextual-admissions/

I hope this is enough info for you. If there is anything more you need to know that's not in those pages, you'll need to e-mail [email protected] but hopefully this'll answer what you want to know.

Hope that helps
