Failing an MA Degree and retaking an MA degree in a Different Subject Through SFE?

Hey all,

I am severely disappointed in the current MA that I am studying. Now semester two has started, there are elements of my creative dissertation that I am absolutely dead set against. these elements can't be changed after already conversing with the defensive lecturers about it. I won't just drop out of the course though. I committed to it, so I'll see it through even I fail.

I'd like to know though, if I fail my current MA Degree, does Student Finance have a back up year in place for retakes? And if they do, could this retake be done at a different institution in a different subject?

I before I enrolled onto my current MA, there was an alternative for which I received an offer. However at the time I was jobless and flat broke (the institution was over 100 miles away to travel) so I unfortunately stayed locally with the institution where I completed my BA Degree.

If it turns out I fail this year, and I'd love nothing more than to go ahead and try to receive a place on the original MA I wanted to do last summer.

If anyone can give me info on the Student Finance stuff, I'd be very grateful.

There's a specific SFE forum where the specialists will be able to answer on the funding, but I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

It's also likely to be a no in regards to completing at another institution. Because Masters degrees are much more individual in their content, methods of assessment, and arguably standards, than undergrad degrees, institutions are much less willing to award their degrees based on large parts of the work being completed to another institution's standards. The notable exception to this is the Open University.

It might be frustrating and less than ideal, but remember that the genuine academic skill is in being able to present a coherent argument, and it is a virtue to be able to argue for black or for white with equal rigour, regardless of personal preference. Whilst it in certainly less personally satisfactory to argue something your heart isn't in, no-one knows that but you, and it doesn't alter the value of your degree. Some would argue it sets you up better for future academic challenges to successfully argue something you disagree with.
