Biology careers

I’m thinking of doing a degree in biology but I can’t actually seem to find any careers that involve biology (high paying ) so does anyone have any ideas of careers in biology? I’ve looked at AHPs, but apart from that and research I really don’t know what else I would end up doing

Hi @Zoey101.x

It is great to hear you are thinking about a Biology degree!

There are so many different careers you can go into from biology. You could go into research/field research, ecologist, scientific writing, the pharmaceutical industry (e.g. regulatory affairs, clinical trials, sales, consulting), finance, teaching, environmental law, patent law, clinical scientist, food biology, agricultural science...plus many many more!! Have a look at society pages, such as The Royal Society of Biology for inspiration https://www.rsb.org.uk/careers-and-cpd/careers.

What sector do you think you will want to work in after graduating?

if you're really after the money maybe a patent attorney

I think maybe trying to figure out what sector you would want to work in and then trying to get experience in certain roles (work experience and internships but even just attending open days/online workshops or speaking to people in the profession) can help you decide. I suggest having a look on Eventbrite for these opportunities and most of them are free and online.

I attended a talk by patent attorneys and that helped me decide that it was definitely not for me.

Hi @Zoey101.x,
there's so much you can do with Biology! Once you try the different modules on your course, you'll get an idea of which areas of biology you prefer. A biology undergraduate degree would also be the perfect platform to do a masters or even further if you wanted to. Highly specialised qualifications like this will get you the best jobs so a biology degree would be a great foundation for this. That said, if you don't want to do further education after your undergraduate degree, consider doing a placement whilst at uni. This way you'll get proper experience in the field which looks really impressive on your CV and helps you realise what you like/don't like. Good luck!

Hey, thank you so much for the ideas!
I think careers to do with infectious diseases sound really interesting so I guess something more healthcare related

Have you looked into the NHS Scientific Training Programme? https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/career-planning/study-and-training/graduate-training-opportunities/nhs-scientist-training-programme. There is also lots of lab roles in hospitals within virology/microbiology departments too.

You may also be interested in a postgraduate MSc course to become a Physician Associate.
