1) write down the chemical equation for the free radical substitution reaction between ethane and chlorine

Initiation:

So Cl2 -> .Cl + .Cl ( a chlorine molecule is splitted into two free radical chlorines)

Propagation (A.K.A chain reaction)
1) .Cl + CH3CH3 -> •CH3CH2 + HCl (chlorine radical reacts with methane to form HCl and the methane becomes a radical)
2) .CH3CH2 + Cl2 -> .Cl + CH3CH2Cl (chlorine radical is reformed...so it is acting like a catalyst and Chloroethane is formed)

Termination
This step is the reaction where any 2 radicals come together to form a molecule...
e.g 2.Cl -> Cl2

*note the full stop is supposed to represent the radical and should really be placed where the bond had been broken in UV light)

they haven't asked for the mechanism,so i think it's,
C2H6 + 6Cl2 ----> C2Cl6 + 6HCl

This is the mechanism btw

Thanks, what about this question

Write down three possible products, other than chloromethane form the photochemical reaction between CH4 and CL2

Write down three possible products, other than chloromethane form the photochemical reaction between CH4 and CL2

there are 4 H atoms in CH4
so we can get 4 possible products
1st is chloromethane by removing 1 H atom
but they didn't ask for this so they are askimg for the remaining 3 products other than this.
2nd is dichloromethane by removing 2 H atoms and substituting with Cl atoms
3rd is trichloromethane by removing 3 H atoms and substituting with Cl atoms
4th is tetrachloromethane by removing 4 H atoms (all H atoms from CH4) and substituting with Cl atoms
