Forensic Psychology MSc

Hello, I actually wanted some insight from past graduates of University of Bath and Goldsmiths, University of London for their respective MSc Forensic Psychology courses. I have received an offer from both of them but I’ve been unable to decide which one to go for. Reputation wise, University of Bath ranks much higher than Goldsmiths but its forensic psychology course is quite new and recent compared to Goldsmiths so I am quite confused honestly. I really like Goldsmiths’ modules but I’ve also heard the strikes there are really bad and I want to know which university would be better for job prospects as well? Since I am an international student, I would like to know that as well?

Ohh, is it because of its reputation?

Yhh, you’d wanna go somewhere with a better rank plus it’s in your city. I’m sure the modules are quite interesting and as important at bath too x. Where would you like to go? Have you made up your mind yet?

Yeah that's true. I was feeling confused especially regarding the ranking of the university. And yes, they are! Bath is just a little bit (a lot more lol) pricey. Honestly, I am waiting to hear back from Liverpool and Manchester as well. I really want to go to Manchester but I've been placed on a waiting list. And I think so? If I don't get into Manchester then I think Liverpool or Bath. It's still a little hard to make a decision.

Honestly it’s stilll way too early to make a decision. You have (we both have) more than 3 months to make a decision. I’m also waiting for 3 universities to get back to me so don’t stress it.

Ohh, have you applied for the same course and which universities? And I’d have but I can’t delay it too much either because it’ll delay the visa procedure too :/

Ohhh omg ok that’s stress. You mentioned is expensive so take it out the list. You don’t want to be in debt. You said goldsmith has good modules, that’s all that matters really. It’s important that enjoy it. If you were to remove some unis from your list, which ones would they be? Just to make it easier for you.

I applied for clinical psychology but gosh I really don’t want to commit to a PhD

It is but I won’t be in debt if I go ahead with it too :/. So it makes it more confusing. I didn’t apply to any universities which I could not afford because that’d just make it worse lol. Mhmm, I didn’t think about it that way tbh. I kept trying to decide which university I want to go instead of which one I don’t want to go to. But I think if I got an offer from Liverpool and Manchester, I’d remove Goldsmiths for sure and maybe Liverpool too. This certainly helps!! Thank you.

And aye! At Bath? And I understand honestly, PhDs are rough tbh. Do you have any other options or something else you might want to do instead of clinical psychology?

How long are you willing to delay your visa for? You mentioned you don’t want to delay the process so for around how long? Let’s say 2 months, if you get a response from Manchester, Liverpool and bath within 2 months then you can choose any because they’re all good for psychology. Baths ranks 2nd for psychology, Manchester ranks 7th I believe so they’re both good and Liverpool 22nd. If you care about ranks then you can choose any. Apparently, because bath is a smaller city, it’s much safer and nicer compared to Manchester. Though Manchester has better night life if thats what you look for. Bath also has better accommodation compared to Manchester.

I live in London so I was looking for universities within london. I may just do the clinical psychology masters and try find a job I’ll be happy with and later down the future I’ll do a phd if I want to but I feel like not specialising in something will open more doors us.

I think a week at max tbh. I just received an offer from Liverpool so now I am even more confused. I don't care about the ranking only tbh. I am also trying to figure out which one is really good for forensic psych specifically I guess and which course I like more. And yesss, Bath is really beautiful honestly. I think I would like the place but nightlife is also important for me. I guess I liked how Manchester's ranking, lifestyle and course modules all fit into my expectations so I am having a hard time with others.

Ohh that's actually a good idea. PhD is a huge commitment honestly. Doing a masters is a more of a starting point that will help you prepare for PhD if you feel like doing it later in life. And yes, that's true. If you are not sure yet about what you want to do yet, you can always specialise in something later. That way, you have more options.

The ranks I mentioned were psychology based and not general. Update on what uni you wouldn’t choose? Many international students will want to stay in London but to me, it’s depressing, chaotic and busy. Same as Manchester. Bigger cities mean better night life’s and better food ofc. This also means it’s gonna be expensive. Liverpool is farrr cheaper, night life is fairly decent, you’ll have move fun for cheap.

If you want a city that is easily accessible, cheap and easy to get from one end to the other then I suggest Liverpool. But I would advise looking at the ratings of the course content and employability after the course to help you make a decision, rather than making it solely on the city as Manchester and Liverpool are too similar.

Exactly. What’s your plan for the future?

I know. They are. Bath is the highest ranking for Psych. But it’s also much more expensive than Liverpool and Manchester combined. Tuition fees wise. And I received two scholarships from Liverpool so I’m thinking of going ahead with Liverpool. Is it alright if I go ahead with Liverpool even if Bath is ranked higher or am I making a dumb decision by rejecting Bath out of all? It’s quite confusing. And honestly I don’t think London is my cup of tea for now lol. It seems so expensive + busy. And I think I’ll let go of Manchester for now since I haven’t heard from them for now.

Mhmm, so the course rating is quite similar and employability is a bit higher for Manchester tbh but I don’t have an offer from them yet so I’m stuck between Bath and Liverpool for now and Bath ranks highest out of all them lol. I feel like I’m making a dumb decision.

Honestly! I think I’ll be going ahead with doing Masters in Forensic Psychology and then see if I can do a PhD? As in can I afford it or if I am ready for it then yes. Otherwise work my ass off for 2 years to become a chartered forensic psychologist.

It’s perfectly alright and I don’t think you’re making a dumb decision. Honestly if I got 2 scholarships I would too. If not bath I wanted you to pick Liverpool. Its so much better and the location is definitely worth it. London and Manchester are as expensive and busy as each other tbh, they’re both big cities! Believe it or not, in the uk, employees don’t look at the university you went to but the grade you’ve got and the experience so you’ll be find. What matters is if you enjoy the course or not!

Me too!! Honestly willing to do anything but study after a masters degree. What country are you from?

I am so glad and relieved to hear that honestly! I’ve been fussing over the stats bit of the universities and felt like I was being dumb lol. Thanks for helping me sort out this decision! And Liverpool seems like such a beautiful cityyyy, I’m so excited to experience the kind of life it offers. And ohh! Manchester is big and expensive but I didn’t know it was at the same level as London! And hush, I’m relieved to hear that!

Hahaha I completely understand that! I’m sure it will work out for you the way you want it xx. Job opportunities increase after a masters especially since I’ve heard you can be a PWP as well in the UK. That’s an option if you don’t want to study further after masters!

I’m from India! I’m guessing you’re from UK itself since you mentioned you live in London?

I’m so gladdd we finally came down to a conclusion. Honestly I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Ranks are important don’t get wrong but not for masters or when looking for work. If anything, I’ll say it’s worse.

To become a PWP, I don’t believe you need a degree, just training. There’s so many things one can do without a degree tbh. Yess I’m from London. Make sure you do visit London and other cities for a day or so!!

Ohhh, that's new news for me! that's pretty nice tbh. Definitely planning on seeing other cities in the UK when I come! And, we should definitely meet up whenever I do visit London!

Hopefully!! It’ll be very nicee. One tip, don’t ever share your work with anyone unless you really trust them. Some people are really selfish unfortunately

Yess, it will be! Aaa, I am actually very bad at telling people no if they ask for help, that sounds like big trouble to me :/. I am assuming you had a really bad experience with it?

There’s many ways you can help them just not by sending off your entirely written assignment. Maybe you can after submitting it but definitely not before. I haven’t but my friend has by her own very FrIeNd. Building trust is hard but keeping it is much harder at university
