For me i'm doing american literature so The great Gatsby and My Antonia but there just isn't enough content on My Antonia has anyone done essays for this novel or can help me with any themes thank you so much x

If you're studying The Bloody Chamber or Dracula I'd recommend this document I made for revision:

I'm doing Gatsby as well but I'm comparing it to the Age of Innocence. These are themes that my class had put together for the second question:
• Love/marriage/relationships
• Corruption/morality
• The Dream
• Characters requiring/ seeking a fresh start
• Restlessness
• Isolation/ loneliness
• Hope in adversity (a previous exam question)
• Individualism vs community
• The position of women
• Men/ masculinity/ role of men
• Sense of futility/ pointlessness/ lack of purpose
• Superficiality
• Social class, tension, social mobility, immigration
• Hedonism/ consumerism/ materialism/ commercialism/ capitalism
• Social events
• Freedom/ Europe/ American values
• Status/ Power
• Money/ wealth

I'm doing American Literature, does anyone know how to answer the unseen extract question? I usually try and do three paragraphs grouping together key ideas but my friend just writes about the passage, going through it from start to finish, so I'm wondering what is the best method for this lol

My teacher said that we can do it either way - it’s just whatever works best for you. I do 3 ideas paras too but if you find the other way easier then try that :smile:

I've been taught to go with 3 themes that are in the text and go through the passage and find the quotes which support the particular themes. I personally think that it's a better way since you then have 3 distinct paragraphs and can focus on one particular point per paragraph

Also, it's better to read through the extract once to familiarise yourself, and underline anything that jumps out to you. As you're reading through the first time, just think about what themes are there. Then, stop and properly think of the themes that are in the extract - make sure you have at least 3. Go through the extract again and, this time, find quotes that you can easily analyse for each of the themes. If you have more than 3 themes at the end of reading the extract, use the 3 that you believe are the strongest.

If you're doing American lit, the American Dream is most likely going to be one of the themes in the extract, unless the extract is a bit weird. (also bear in mind that the term wasn't coined until 1931 by James Adams)

in one of my mocks I included further knowledge surrounding my Sister Carrie and my teacher gave me AO3 marks for it, I believe
