You mean the Red Army that was so ill equipped it was one rifle between two, the Red army where soldiers were forced to advanced and shot if they retreated, the red army that was so poor supplied the soldiers at the bottom stole clothes and equipment from the dead, enemy and friendly, and as it pushed the German army back into Germany they began raping and looting what was left of Germany?
Yeah, what a great army [/sarcasm]
It was undefeated at the time, so yeah it was the best army. Without it, people like you would be under Nazi command now.

But having that many, plus the lost munitions and the massive captured, missing and sick is fairly unacceptable of an army fighting such a meagre force in comparison. Plus having more soldiers does not directly lead to losing more. That is a false assumption which is not supported by the bare bones statistics presented here.

PIRA

vs.

British Army
MI-5/6
Armed Loyalist Groups
RUC
Garda
Informers

Result: NI Peace process

Whether you're as English as Finchley, they managed a remarkable campagin.

The PIRA were created to defend the catholic community from attacks by armed loyalist groups and in defence of civil rights.

****ing losers they never win anything. Tbf Pakistan was fighting the Bangladeshis as well at the time, and they lost that war too.
your using wikepedia as evidence on wars , anyone could of changed that , secondly pakistan is in the high end in terms of nucleur power , special forces and its Pak army , also the number of unclassified weapons being made everyday no wonder no one would try evading it and ecspecially as its best mates with china and china are willing to back pakistan in any war , conflict or invasion , know the truth before chatting waffles

Lol....and you are deluded enough to think that the Chinese would back the Pakistani's in any war?

Please, the Chinese don't care about a dump.

Regardless of technology, which do you think was the best army in history - in terms of training, discipline, strategy, synchronisation, etc.
the Roman Empire's troops, they invented tactics and strategy that is still being in use today! amazing!

why is a thread created 25/12/2010 trending 8 months later?

Depends what your criteria are - ie best forces during a specific conflict ?
Quickest ever victories in conventional major cross border conflict include-
Israels victory over Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq in 6 days
Indias victory over Pakistan and Bulgaria victory over Kingdom of Serbia both took less than a fortnight.

More suitable i wuld suggest is a military achievment spanning a period of time - led by a specific general.
1. Gengis Khan - conquered most of central asia north africa and central european with a fairly modest number of tribal archers on horse back. Sacked the Persian empire - one of the largest armies in history. His tactics are still employed today by military tacticians.

2. Cyrus the great - defeated the 3 biggest empires of his time and defended his conquest for his whole lifetime

2. Alexander the Great - simliar to Cyrus conquered all the major empires of his time and held an empire that spanned the known world

4.Hannibal - Still regarded as one of the greatest military strategists of his time - knocked over the Romans on their home turf and occupied their lands for nearly a decade.

5. Napoleon - cant forget about this lad , i read somewhere he is recorded as presiding over the most victorious battles than any leader in history.

Army, its too debatable.

Best Navy though, the Royal Navy from about 1700 - 1950, without a doubt.

Err they were pushed all the way back to Stalingrad before they really started pushing back properly. They were not well organised or equipped, they gambled most of their tactics at throwing soldiers at the enemy because a large amount of soldiers was the one resource they did have.

For me it would have to be the spartans at Thermopylae. Absolutely insane holding off that many persians for that long.
