Yay, are you overseas or home? Also, have you accepted your offer yet/do you know if theres any reason to accept quickly or not?

Is anyone still waiting for a decision for MSc Crim? My upload button disappeared on Wednesday and I haven't heard anything yet. Should we assume that all offers have been rolled out?

I'm still waiting, button disappeared on Wednesday too

I got a mail informing me that I have been put in the waiting list. Does anyone have any idea on how that works and whether or not waitlisted candidates usually receive an offer?

I'm a home student  I've accepted the offer, yes. Just trying to figure out now how to get them my transcript.

In my experience, there really is no way of telling if and/or when you'll receive an offer. I was on the waiting list last year, and I remember requesting information on the stats from 2018-2020 (or something like that), with everyone on the list getting in one year and none the next. There's no pattern, and I think the pandemic has made things even less predictable. Sorry, wish I could bring better news ... Of course, this is just my impression.

Hi, I filled out a means-test fee-support/bursary form that was sent to me when I received my offer. Does anyone know whether if I accept my offer early (have to do so by 16 April) it will affect the decision about giving me this funding? I get the impression I will hear about this funding before the 16th anyway (based on posts in here from last year) so I suppose I could just wait until I hear about funding?

Hi - did you get a confirmation or anything email back when you accepted your offer?

Hey everyone, I have started another thread for the 2022 MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice here:

Has everyone here also applied/gotten an offer from Cambridge (Mphil in Criminological Research)? I'm in the very unexpected position of being able to pick (because i've gotten a scholarship not tied to either uni), and really not sure what to do? Any thoughts? My interests are broadly around criminalisation and incarceration of women, youth, and vulnerable persons.

I have an offer for both as well. I chose Oxford because of it being a MSc rather than an MPhil. I'm not 100% sure I'd like to go into research afterwards, so I thought a MSc would leave future paths a bit more open. Was torn as well, though!

Okay yes I'm seeing now that the MPhil in Criminological Research is actually 3 months longer because you do an extended dissertation and do a fair bit more modules on social sciences research methods and design than the Oxford MSc. And then you could continue onto the DPhil if desired. Whereas the MSc is three months shorter and somewhat less empirical research focused, but then you have the option of continuing on to the MPhil immediately after for a second year, where you would do research methods courses and a 30,000 word dissertation and continue onto a DPhil after THAT if desired. Lol I probably should have looked into this further before now.

Does anyone on here have much info about the MPhil in Criminology at Oxford? There's so little information online. @Karan Mphil Crim if you have time, could you shed some light on what the process of going from the MSc to MPhil is like? What are the additional fees of doing that? I only have funding secured for the one year MSc, so I worry I wouldn't even financially be able to go on to the MPhil if I wanted to/felt I needed more research education?

For incarceration studies I know for certain that both Oxford and Cambridge are world-leading with incredible academics focusing on various aspects around the subject and also many PhDs are being pursued by PGR students on those issues - you can find more on the Centre for Criminology/Institute of Criminology > People and explore those below by clicking on each person for both Universities (for Oxford it is 'Centre for Criminology' and for Cambridge it's 'Institute of Criminology').

For Oxford, just a few of the world-leading names on those topics include Professors Mary Bosworth, Carolyn Hoyle and Rachel Condry, but really there is a very big focus on and around incarceration, exclusion, death penalty, family/youth justice with numerous academics focusing on those.

Cambridge is also huge on incarceration and justice, I know that world-leading academics such as Professors Alison Liebling, Caroline Lanskey and Loraine Gelsthrope, amongst many others, are there.

It would be advisable to go through all the academics and see their areas of interests, publications, supervision interests, etc, and then maybe check the postgraduate research students as well, see their topics of choice and their supervisors.

Thank you so much for this really helpful reply - do you/does anyone know if it is standard practice to move on from the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice into the DPhil in Criminology thereafter? Or is it expected that you would do the additional 1 year MPhil course following the MSc as well before going into the DPhil?

Following the MSc you can go straight to the DPhil, there is absolutely no standard requirement for the MPhil. MPhil and MSc are generally seen as equals in the sense that they both provide the necessary training and skills for you to pursue the DPhil. It says on the website that it is optional to further go into the MPhil as an add-on to the MSc, and if you get accepted into the DPhil in the meantime, the MPhil basically merges into your first DPhil year. Quite complex but I would not worry too much about it.

Anyone heard anything about departmental funding/bursaries yet? Starting to wonder if I should assume I've been unsuccessful
