It's in my school notes, but more likely that they'll give you the names of the reagents and ask you to draw it out? Not sure.

What does the specification say?

It's kind of vague I guess it says (f) describe condensation polymerization for the formation of polyesters such as terylene and polyamides such as nylon and Kevlar
(g) draw the structural formulae of the repeat units of the polumers in 5.4.2 f

Am i the only one that hasn't begun studying, although the exam is tomorrow...
Its my last exam, and I personally couldnt care less of how I will do, since unit 4 and 6 were close to impossible

hey, how to do this?

10 cm3 of a gaseous hydrocarbon, CxHy, was mixed with excess oxygen and ignited.The total gas volume was measured at room temperature and pressure before andafter combustion, and it was found that it had contracted by 20 cm3. On shakingthe remaining gases with excess potassium hydroxide solution, the total gas volumecontracted by a further 40 cm3.

Calculate the molecular formula of CxHy

Its simple the solution is yellow bcos the the colour of the ion CrO4- is yellow. Anything yellow with chromium is CrO4-

The equation can be written as:

X + O2 --> aCO2 + bH2O

Where X is the formula of the unknown hydrocarbon. Since volume ratios are 15 : 90, this means that the stoichiometry of X : O2 is 1 : 6. So you can write:

X + 6O2 --> aCO2 + bH2O

now the oxygen has to be balanced, so you need 12 on the right, since you know there are 12 on the left. Now looking at the options, C4H8 is the only one that works, as this would yield the equation:

C4H8 + 6O2 --> 4CO2 + 4H2O

so the moles of oxygen are balanced. You might have to try making equations for all the options before you realise which one balanced properly.
