It was pretty obvious Netherlands were going to win, Brazil have such a crap team and hardly any good players are there.

When you're already past the last defender of the opposing team when you start to run for goal, then you're offside.

Why is that an offside though? Surely, being able to make it past the defenders is a skill and should be encouraged?

To prevent someone from goalhanging. Imagine all the defenders were on the halfway line in a similar style to Germany...all you'd need to do is tell a striker to wait in the penalty area, then when you get the ball, lob it to him to score a goal.

    Two questions.

What's goalhanging and why is it bad?

Where's the halfway line? Why would all the defenders be on that line anyway, aren't they all meant to move around?

Without offside, players could just goal hang and wait until the ball gets lobbed to the other side of the pitch :P

Goalhanging is when you deliberately stay in the other team's penalty area so that you can scoop the goals in as soon as they're passed to you. It's bad because it doesn't make football interesting (all you'll get are four strikers spending the entire match in the box with the only passes being speculative long shots).

Halfway line is halfway up the pitch. (where they kick off the ball at the start, at half time, and when someone's scored a goal) Germany play a high defensive line like that because they play a possession-orientated strategy which focuses on keeping hold of the ball whilst passing it around inside the opponent's half. Having a high line makes it more likely for you to maintain this pressure.
