Does anyone know if you can do the EPQ twice?
The topic I'm doing at the moment is completely irrelevant for what I want to do at university so it's going to be no use for in interviews etc.
You can still talk about skills that you learn from doing the project, which will be useful at university.

Ive just completed my second epq-even if not relevant, time management and strong independent learning is always highly looked upon. Good luck with it all

Yup, I did it with the same exam board, obviously 2 different projects, so I could speak of each separately and what I learnt from each and how I developed my own learning through it.

How may marks do you get for the actual dissertation? And how is it marked? I have no idea what I am doing.

    Thank you

Okay so if your doing AQA then its out of 50.

10 marks for A01 - Manage, Identify, design, plan, and carry out a project, applying a range of skills, strategies and methods to achieve objectives.

10 marks for -AO2 Use Resources, Research, critically select, organise and use information, and select and use a range of resources. Analyse data, apply it relevantly and demonstrate understanding of any links, connections and complexities of the topic.

20 marks for - AO3 Develop and Realise, Select and use a range of skills, including, where appropriate, new technologies and problem solving, to take decisions critically and achieve planned outcomes.

10 marks for - AO4 ReviewEvaluate all aspects of the extended project, including how outcomes relate to stated objectives and own learning and performance. Select and use a range of communication skills and media, in an appropriate format, to present evidence of project outcomes and conclusions.

As you can see you only get 40% of the marks from the actual project.
What you need to make sure is excellent is your log book and evaluation.

So in your evaluation make sure you say
-you may want to add an extra bit of evaluation at the end of the project, separate from the log book (this is what i did)
-what you could have done better and why didn't you
-limitations you faced, such as access to journals
    -what went well
-did you come to a conclusion
-how accurate was the information you used
-what areas did you NOT include that may have been relevant and why (you can pick up lots of evaluation marks for this)

    Using your log book:
-make sure you date everything (make it up if needed )
-the conclusion part of the evaluation is rather like an abstract. Which should summarise your findings. This is not an evaluation, but you might like to touch on aspects like limitations of data/information collection.
-Keep in neat and tidy if you can

    Other key points
-CHANGE YOUR TITLE (you can gain lots of marks by just changing your title and saying why in your evaluation and this shows development of your question)
    - If you have done a research project make sure you include an abstract at the begging.
-Referencing is verryyyyy important (to avoid plagiarism). The best way to reference work is the Harvard method unless its research orientated then you might like to use something like the American Psychological version of referencing.

If you need any more help just ask
-make sure your bibliography is up to date-as it sometimes checked

Has anyone else done the GCSE version, Level 2 Project Qualification (it's almost the same as EPQ just it's worth half a GCSE instead of half an A level and the word requirements are less and you don't have to do footnotes)?

    Hi guys,

I have decided to write an extended project relating to the subject I want to take at University (International Business). I don't want it to directly relate to the subject however I want to look at some issues that arise in the economy which can affect a business.

This is the angle I am looking at:
    • The Banking industry not lending to small start-up businesses (Due to being pesimistic about the future).
Leading to not as much growth in the economy (higher unemployment levels for example)
Then look at how start up businesses can boost growth in an economy and help ease recession
Why Banks should lend to small businesses

Its a bit muddled up but you get the overall idea. I'm just wondering if anyone thinks that this subject is 'interesting' enough to get a good mark on, I think I could write a good piece, I just hope the examiner doesn't fall asleep. I believe this is a current issue and may be relevant. Also has anyone else wrote an extended project and if so would you be able to give me any structure tips for the essay.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thankyou!

Ideally, the subject area is not really the most important part of the EPQ. It's more about how you conduct the research and present your dissertation. I know people who are doing EPQ's on subjects such as 'why teenage girls wear make up', so I don't think you have much to worry about. It's more about what interests you.

I'm currently working on an EPQ for Virtue Ethics, the best way to structure your essay is to start of with your abstract and introduction, then show a member of staff at your college or sixth form. Although the project is independent, you will need some sort of guide to go to after each stage of your EPQ. This could perhaps be a head of sixth form or college, or your subject teacher. Which exam board are you doing yours with? I'm doing mine with AQA, and their website has fairly helpful information on what the examiner is looking for. Also maybe your school is able to provide you with some previous projects or resources?

I'm thinking of doing the EPQ; however I am struggling to come up with a decent question/investigation.

At uni, I'm thinking of studying law and I want to base my EPQ around science and law, so possibly ethics.

However, I don't know what question to study.

If I cut this down (tl;dr):
I'm planning to do an computer program as an artefact. How would I do research for this? or is it a stupid idea (my supervisor mentioned lack of research)

Longer version: I want to do CompSci at uni and I'm attempting to do my project on compilers and writing one (probably a bit ambitious). I originally listed reference books and papers in my planning and my supervisor said it wasn't enough - so I've added that I'll attempt to contact a uni professor about this.

What sort of research do they mean for an artefact project? and what is the report on?

Because I requested it late, I'm going to be entered for the EPQ during the A2 cycle (I'm AS at the moment), so I'll probably finish working on it this summer.

Is there any point in my mentioning of it in my Personal Statement (beginning of A2) if it hasn't been marked yet?

you should mention it in your p.s especially because it takes so long to write!!!! i mentioned it in mine and i hadn't been given the mark for it actually i still don't have the mark for it. I think it will help because the unis can see you capable of doing things outside of the curriculum with very little support.

i don't know much about law etc. but how about something to do with punishment for crimes over a certain time period, you could mention ethics in that

You're right. Especially if it's related to the course you want to take on!

Did you apply for 2012 entry?

I'm taking a gap year where I'll be working most of the time, however I would have loved to have the opportunity to do an Extended Project, as I haven't been able to whilst doing a levels. I know you can do A levels on your own, but how about EPQ? You usually need a supervisor so I've heard. Thoughts anyone?
