Congrats to everyone on their offers!
Quick question, has anyone else firmed Uni of Manchester?
I had a mini panic attack recently and feel like maybe I should swap to Leeds Beckett (my insurance) just because I liked the uni more and the 3 year structure but I don't know! Everytime I ask someone I know they go all elitist on me and go on about Manchesters reputation and it's not helping me at all Anyone else having this/can give advice?
Go where you feel happiest! I have spoken to a senior speech therapist who says it hardly matters where you did your degree so don't be swayed by elitist opinions. I chose MMU over Manchester last year as I preferred their approach. Ignore the league tables - they are of little consequence when dealing with a course like SLT. If I had chosen a more standard degree course then the uni I picked would have been different as it would have mattered more.

    Go with your heart!

Thank you so much Amy, that's really helped it's just so difficult because I've got teachers and students at sixth form judging thinking about themselves; I feel really swayed to Leeds and generally the university's facilities and lecturers (plus it's cheaper living!) and I don't know if I can hack 4 years away from home.

The normal rules for picking a uni don't apply to our course as its so specialised so don't listen to people - had the same thing last year at college - why MMU when I got A*AAA in my A levels - they just don't understand.

I loved Leeds last year at the interview so I get where you are coming from - fortunately for me they rejected me so I didn't have to choose between them and MMU (which was always my first choice as I wanted to do the combined course with psychology that only MMU offered). Manchester I liked but wasn't wowed by if you know what I mean.

Make the choice that's right for you - its the same qualification in the end xx

Reputation doesn't matter, at the end of the day you graduate with the same degree; you're funded in the exact same way meaning they reach the same standards so you have the exact same prospects!

If you love Leeds then your gut is trying to tell you something! Having said that Manchester is an amazing city! Leeds is too but I feel Manchester will be a lot more academic and exam heavy.

I'm going to email the uni but I wondered if anyone can help on here first! I have a conditional offer from UEA subject to a satisfactory second reference and DBS, health check etc because I'm a mature student, so I already have my A level grades. Does anyone know if I wait until I've firmed the uni before I start to meet the conditions? I assume that that would be the case!
You have to make your choices before you meet the conditions. The fact you already have your grades is irrelevant seeing as SLTS has extra checks to pass. The only benefit of being a mature student is that they might send the paperwork out to you quicker so your offer gets made unconditional before August.

If you want to practice as a SLT then it makes little difference where you study. You stand a better chance of getting a job in the region where you study but you cannot control for the prejudices of whoever you selecting candidates for interview so I would not worry too much. But it is wrong to suggest all universities are equal (the same is true for medical schools). If you know you want to do research then some universities are better able to support you.

It is all about balance. Picking somewhere you want to live is fine but you might not get that choice when you apply for jobs so weighing things up now is actually good practice for the future!

DMU is making everyone wait until June so it may be the same for UEA? I dunno tho.

While I agree with nearly all of this post I would say rather than weighing up the universities research capabilities look into the individual departments because Manchester's English Dept would obviously destroy Leads' because it's a Russell group but I think that Leeds has a really strong SaLT department so it would be wrong to write them off because the whole uni isn't up to the same level.

As far as employers preferring more prestigious universities I get the impression it isn't the same for SaLT, like you say though it is unavoidable but it shouldn't be as much of a deciding factor as if you were applying for Law for instance where it'd definitely affect you.

Relocating is true, you may have to do that for your job but while you're at university you should make the most of being where you WANT to be rather than where you feel you need to be especially in a situation like this where it won't affect you detrimentally.

I recently done a little bit of research about this just in case I had to choose between universities. I emailed a few companies including the NHS and their slt departments to ask them about employability. I explained about choosing certain universities. I also emailed the rcslt to ask the same question. All of which replied stated ... They do not look at the university in which you attended. They are bothered about your result and your ability. All universities have to follow set guidelines for slt degrees. I think go to the university that makes you feel happiest.. After all its not as if you're only going to be stuck there for a week. It's a long time, I hope this helps you to make a decision

As has already been answered - yes it trailed off a bit last year - some more activity over DBS checks etc and closer to results day.

I thought the saddest part last year was how few returned to the forum to report results and confirming where we were all going, especially after sharing so much of the journey together.

Happy Easter to you and everyone else! Nice long break before exams yay

Thank you everyone who replied, it's been a massive help!

I think I just rushed into sending off my choices (based on people around me) and didn't consider things like length of the course or facilities of the uni (Leeds have an modern department whereas Manchesters isn't so much) or even finances, e.g I'll struggle more at Manchester because living is slightly more expensive than in Leeds for me, even if I find a part time job + have my parents supplement me!

I'm still deciding, but am rubbish at making decisions, so I'll probably ponder on it more

Its wise to take your time - its a big decision after all! I was the opposite last year - it took me an age to press that button to confirm my choice - I am as indecisive as you are it seems lol!

As I said before - go with your heart and don't let other peoples opinions sway you.

Are you doing A levels now or are you a "mature" student?

Is anyone still around??? It's a bit sad that everything's died down these days! I suppose I feel that way though as I'm still waiting on a decision after interview, whereas most people have already had their decisions a while ago! Oh well, anyone still waiting for BCU??......or is it just me:eek::confused:

Can't believe you are still waiting! Have BCU given you a rough time on when you should hear back from them? It's been a long old process this hasn't it?!

Yep, still waiting!! They said to give it a couple of weeks, 3 weeks at the most. Hopefully I'll hear some positive news this week, but I won't be holding my breath!!!
