On a non-election note we now have the strongest East Pacific May hurricane on record..

With sustained winds of 155mph that would rip your roof off in many cases.

BNP leader Nick Griffin apparently conceded he would no longer be a MEP in the North West in a tweet from his Twitter account nickgriffinmep.

He wrote: "If anyone can tell me how to change my Twitter title without losing the account I'd be obliged"

Nice result for the Greens in the South West.

I haven't properly crunched the numbers but it seems they only won it as a result of the "An Independence from Europe" votes not going to UKIP.

New Green Party MEP!
The spoiler party, An Independence from Europe, denied UKIP the second seat there and the Lib Dems were also very close. Fantastic for the Greens to be winning there though, it's an upset and it's exactly where they'd want to be gaining.

An Independence from Europe has done us all a favor (as well as N2EU) to deny a few MEP and vote to UKIP!

Just to say on my earlier point, that was very much said with tongue in cheek, and tin hat on.

I don't personally believe the EU are behind a big vote-rigging process to damage the eurosceptic parties, but this appears to be the feeling in some parts of Europe right now. May well only increase anger at the EU.
Hopefully it will all collapse within a few months, then UKIP will disband, and we can all go back to living happy lives of Labour vs Tory and none of this silly EU business interfering

NO2EU voters would not in any circumstance vote for UKIP.

It is laughable that the only ways a green mep can get a seat is because of a party diverting votes from UKIP.

Well behind all these numbers their appears to be one crumb of comfort for the Liberals. The 7% swing tonight may be resulting in extinction in Europe (and the FDP in their group from Germany) but it's lower than the local elections which in a general election would still give them 16%.

Yeah, I voted for them and TUSC. Technically I'm also a member.

Ah fair enough, I suspected TUSC for you in the General election. Are you not a fan of the many far left groups - they are so divided it must be hard to choose one. What is your view on the new one - Left Unity?

Awful night for Labour, neck and neck with Cons a year before the general election, when incumbency effect kicks in...

There're lots of far-left groups, and it's a shame things are so splintered. I'm a member of the Socialist Party of England and Wales, which is the main group behind TUSC along with the RMT trade union. The main problem for the left is the lack of a proper workers' party, a democratic organisation with one member, one vote, and I think Left Unity see that this is the problem. But their attempt at a solution won't work because they just are expecting numerous parties to just accept a non-federal structure, which realistically would undermine the current party leaderships. They also have no connections with the union movement.

I see what you mean, I think the problem is the splintering of ideology - Leninism, Marxism, Trotsky-ism ect between the pure communist and socialist.

Anyway does any have any idea who the next Parliament President will be? SD or EPP?

Slight worry when a Griffin tops the count in the North West, but she's a Labour candidate of (hopefully) no relation.
