YES! Finally a thread which I can fully identify with!!!!! OK, a slight exaggeration there but hello fellow non-drinkers! I might be more studious in the art of non-drinking than most here because I have never taken even a sip of alcohol in my life. A lot here state that they occasionally drink, but I never do.

I hope I'm not the only one here that never drinks.
    It's okay, me neither

Do you think it will be harder to make friends in freshers week if we don't drink?

If taste is your problem, try amaretto + coke (tastes like cherry coke/ dr. pepper) or something like pimms.

Of course I'm not trying to negatively affect this thread, just if taste is the only reason then I feel that is something that can be gotten around.

I mean personally I like good lagers, bitters, ales, some wines and several cocktails but I'd say amaretto + coke is a drink that pretty much everyone seems to like.
Thanks for the advice tbh I've never been that attracted to drinking but I'm open to try things in moderation. I do like pimms but I have it rather diluted. Think I just have a sweet tooth lol!

I know people who didn't drink during freshers and don't drink, and they haven't had any issues making friends, because they've made friends with people on their course and their roommates, and generally just people they see around the uni - one of the guys like this is one of my best friends at uni, and he's living in a house with us next year!

My biggest piece of advice would be to not just walk into halls on the first day and use "I don't drink" as a greeting, because it may seem a little militant. Rather, wait until it comes up in conversation - if people offer you a drink, or if you go shopping with your flatmates from halls, and when you get to the alcohol section and someone brings it up, just casually say "I don't really drink alcohol". That way, you're not pushing it in their face

Plenty of people at uni don't drink, and I wouldn't have thought you'll be missing out on anything - if you're prepared to go and have a good time, you'll have a good time regardless of whether you've drank sambuca or pepsi. The benefit is that you guys will be able to remember all the embarrassing things the drunk people did the next day

no, it shouldn't be a problem at all as long as you still get involved in activities and talk to flatmates. people wont look down on you because you dont drink.

If you like sweet drinks, want to try something, but don't want anything too crazy then a Brothers cider may be up your street. Far too sweet for my liking, that's for sure! As you're not really a drinker, it's not worth paying ~£3 for a bottle of something you may or may not like, but if you see anyone else having some, ask for a taste saying you've never had it before

    ------------

I am a drinker (and even work in a bar :p: ), but just posting here to offer bit of advice!

Thanks for all the advice think ill just have to try a few different things as I say it's the taste that puts me off mainly as what I have tried has been horrible IMO but then I'm used to squash and lemonade Having said that i still dont see the point in getting drunk though im fine with drinking to be sociable! thank you anyways you've been very insightful

I'm not sure how I feel about fresher's week right now I drink if there's something I like (Archers and lemonade is a personal favourite) but I'm not interested in getting utterly smashed. I just don't like it. Hopefully people won't think I'm too weird - especially since the college I'm going for (Lancaster uni has a college system) has a bit of a reputation as a 'party college' - 15 hour bar crawl, etc.

You sound fairly sensible. My advice would be to just remain and act your usual self - don't feel the need to drink purely for socialising. If peers think you are weird just stick a finger up at them, you'd be better off with friends that share your sentiment and not silly, annoying "party animals"

The reason why many of us came to this thread was to escape from silly "party animals" like you. There is much more to life than drinking, getting drunk and going to pointless parties. "YOLO" is a silly cliched saying so don't use it - it doesn't enhance your intelligence.

    Goodbye.

to be honest, ive had best of both worlds - ive tried getting drunk and have done 3 or 4 times ( one of them wasnt exactly DRUNK drunk, but i was in a bad place and stupidly drank quickly and felt robotic...)

ive found you can still have that 'out of it' feeling when insanely hyper. i went to a bar once and i was just really happy because the bf and i had a lovely day with his friends and i then got hyper on j2o... i acted more out of it than any of the people drinking ahah.

so im living proof that you can go somewhere sober and still act 'drunk' and have an awesome time.

that or im just strange ... probably more the latter ahah...

Not just you. I'll only have one or two bottles of Smirnoff Ice (only drink I know I like) and everyone thinks I'm hammered or something.

Never gotten drunk so don't know if the 'out of it' feeling is the same but I defiantly had a buzz going whilst still being in control (if that makes sense)
