So the first line is the 8th rank, the last line is the first rank

Something like 1p2N2k means: on that rank, from the left, there is first an empty square, then a White Pawn, then two empty squares, then a Black Knight, then two empty squares, then the White King

Good luck!

Looking good so far! Can you give me a full variation - or at least the general idea of how the puzzle is solved?

so

ra3,Rf8.

rf3,and so on

all im thinking is since the rook is kind of pinned to the 8th rank preventing a conversion of a queen, and knight cant do much..so sacrifice the rook for the f7 pawn ..and get a queen..

hmm.btw ...do you know how we can get pgn files to work on here?

Sorry, I'm not very good with computers, so can't help you out r.e. pgn files!

Okay, so after Ra3, let's say Black plays ...h6. Then after Rf3, Black can play Rd1...

You're on the right lines though r.e. lack of rook and knight mobility and queening!
12. I've been playing chess since October 2010, don't play as part of a club. To be fair, I'm only 16, broke 1300 in Blitz on chess.com

As white, I'm a 1. e4 man, I love the options. Ruy Lopez, King's Indian Attack, I've always enjoyed playing against the Najdorf...dunno why :P
As black, I tend to play the French Defence, but I'm becoming quite partial to the Sicilian.

My openings against 1. d4 however, need work. I know theory behind the King's Indian Defence and the Slav to a basic level, definitely need to work on em!
13. I've been playing chess on and off for quite a few years. I just find the openings frustrating, it usually just feels like you're going through the motions a bit; move the king pawn 2 squares, bring out the knights, perhaps a bishop then start the pawn war in the centre of the board, with your opponent usually echoing every move up until this point.

First of all welcome !!.. I have never actually bothered with the french ,although one of the best openings for black ,it has quite a few different variations which you can go into , also if not played properly can lose very quickly...

when I started out my favourite was the Fried liver attack , but quickly became aware of its limitations

I've been playing chess on and off for quite a few years. Hi
Agreed..but you always do not have to bring the king pawn(not porn), check out the reti opening ,its my favourite opening..

And even at a higher level , its said opening should be all theory , middle game is where all the shizz happens
15. Here's a short and sweet game I played online yesterday. Was blitz 5mins +5secs per move. I was Black:

1. e4 c5 2. c3 d5 3. exd5 Nf6 4. c4 e6 5. dxe6 Bxe6 6. Nf3 Qe7 7. Qe2 Nc6 8.
Na3 O-O-O 9. g3 Qd7 10. Bg2 Bd6 11. O-O Rhe8 12. b3 Bg4 13. Qd1 Nd4 14. Bb2
Ne2+ 15. Kh1 Qf5 16. Nh4 Qh5 17. f3 Nxg3+ 18. hxg3 Bxg3 0-1

4.c4 isn't the best move in this tricky line; 8.Na3, 12.b3, 13.Qd1 and 14.Bb2 all look a bit dubious to me.

this guy lost with 2 queens. ouch.
17. I like chess, but I never got that involved with it. As far as strategy goes... I have none really. I like to make a zig zag of pawns across the board sometimes....

yh thats strategy ,for most beginners ....
When playing this is what I try to do always

Control the centre 4 squares (by moving your e4and d4 pawns or bring out knights etc.

Bring your pieces out quickly (not pawns )..Development of your peices is important

Castle.(usually kingside)

Obvioulsy there are times its better to do something lese depending on your oppoent's move..

When I started playing that's the advice people gave ,and if you stick to it you will notice a vast improvement in your game..

and then some tactics like the knight fork , pin's etc ..
