Anon cos I use this for student-y things (not a student at the mo tho which is significant to my Q, lol) and this is personal.

I spend almost all my time by myself. I don't think I especially like my company/myself and I'm not 'happy', but I don't think I get 'lonely' either. My mum, dad, doctor, psychiatrist etc. etc. all tell me how 'unhealthy' it is and in papers, telly I see people saying how they 'can't be alone' and on this forum I think I've seen a thread like 'I have an afternoon to myself, what should I do with it?' like it's some big deal.

I have my mum who I see daily and spend an hr or two with in the eves (and live with) so that's a massive massive difference from having no one and I am grateful for that.

Is this that weird? See title - how much time do YOU/could YOU (I know ppl on here like talking about themselves...!) spend alone... and what's 'normal'?

i understand what you mean, both my parents work alot. i see my parents for like a few hours when they come home and even then we dont talk much. we only really talk on sunday when we have a big roast mmm roast. and i dont see them much on the weekends cos i work 9 and 1/2 hours on saturday and then i usually go out in the evenings. and my dad usually goes away on business trips for like 2 weeks at a time alot, i duno this is just normal to me cos i was brought up this way. and i do have a younger brother but we dont get on very well, so we just steer clear of each other, except when i make our dinner...and even then we dont eat together.

my family are fine, except my brother and i. we have a functioning family and we do love each other. and i prefer it when im on my own all the time. its much better than having everyone in the house. its just nice and quiet so i usually spend most of my time alone and i turned out to be fine haha

I've spent all weekend completely alone.

In the past I spent at least 4 maybe 5 days alone. Not even going outside or seeing/communicating to anyone in any way.

I quite like my own company, but then I'm an only child who's used to being left on her own in the house for most of my life.

I like spending time with other people, and I'm quite social, but sometimes I just have one of those times when I think "ARRRGH" and just want to sit by myself, in my pyjamas, eating ice cream out of the tub and watching crappy documentaries on TV about fat people.

I do spend a lot of time on my own, on a gap year and unemployed so its kind of unavoidable! I don't mind it for a day but after that I start to go a bit crazy, have to just go and sit in a coffee shop and read or something just to get out the house!

I don't spend that much time alone, I like being with my close friends, but often through out the day I like a few hours alone, say in the evening just to mooch about.

I love being alone - it's the only way you can do whatever you want to do. I have gone days at uni without speaking to anyone. I also love the company of other though. As long as you're not neglecting all social life, you should be fine.

I spend between 3-6 hours with other people. Last semester was different though I would spend 30 mins at most talking/socialising/being around other people. To be honest I prefer being in my own company and this semester am trying to isolate myself slightly from my 'new company', not because I dislike them but more because I don't like socialising.

i could be quite happy on my own for a while only though...
the guy on my radio station is actually planning to be blindfolded driven around the UK for 10 hours, placed in a soundproof metal box somewhere in the UK and spend 1 month in a metal box thats 3 ft high and 8ft by 8ft LMAO
the game will start in 2 weeks and the aim of the game is for people to realise where he is cause then they will win £30 000 (i think) but he doesnt know where he is and only 2 people in the world know his location
the box is already in position somewhere in the uk so you could be walking past it right now and he will have to be in there for a min of 1 week and max of 1 month and will recieve food through a hatch and will have a box to poop in oh and all this you can see on the internet as there are 2 cameras in there hehe i dnt think he'll last even though hes been spending time alone to prepare

so unless you do this stunt i dont think you can judge if you can live on your own forever (unless you already do)

Hmmm, i don't think it matters whether it's normal or not, just whether you are content the way you are.
I'm a bit in between to be honest. I like spending time with friends but i also like time to myself. I don't like to spend alll weekend out with friends but i hate being stuck by myself all weekend.
Ah i'm quite the same
I love my friends and everything, but sometimes i wish i could be alone sometimes
It sometimes gets to the point when i'm with certain friends too much, and they can be quite draining sometimes
I quite like bus journeys home by myself listening to my iPod and thinking about stuff, but the fact that many of my friends live in the same direction as me makes those kind of bus journeys rare

This is TSR. Most people on here are going to be the more socially quiet/want to be alone type. This won't be an accurate representation of what is 'normal'

Pretty much everyday. I occasionally talk to the people I live with but most of the time I'm pretty lonely.

I'm unemployed, other than two friends everyone I know/knew (in a way that I would phone them up/spend time with them) in my town has left for Uni or w/e. I spend the majority of my week alone, except for when my parents are home in the evenings. I go to a french conversation circle for 2 hours one evening a week and running club for 2 hours another evening and then my jobseekers interview for 5 mins on wednesday mornings, but other than that I could easily end up spending the whole week alone.

I make an effort to meet up with friends at least once a week, doesn't always happen due to their shifts at work though. I also try to visit someone at their uni one weekend a month as well. Otherwise I start getting lonely I made sure I joined groups in my town (the french thing and running) to try to stay sociable and I find it really helps.

so long as it wasn't every week, I could spend all week alone and not go crazy, but I prefer not to, imo its a quick route to depression.

There's an insight into my delightful life for you!

I think the fact that the majority of people here have replied 'I spend a lot of time on my own' means that we seem to think that spending 'a lot' of time on our own is something unusual, when in fact, it's not. Very few people will want to be surrounded by people all the time, and it's natural that even the most sociable people will spend at least a good few hours per day alone, particularly when you're young and not married/living with someone.

I go out/see people a few times a week, and this is basically all the socialising I need. When I'm at home, I'll gladly stay in my room most of the day anyway; the only 'family' activity available to me is watching television, and I don't really watch any at all.
