    Not necessarily because they just go over basic stuff that you would know if you did the required reading, it kind of breaks down what you ought to know. Whether you want to get a 2.1/1st depends on how much effort you put in during your own independent study, but your friend must obviously be a legal genius to get a 1st without attending lectures. But you have to realise that seminars/supervisions are the main one's that you should attend. I doubt without them you can aim high.
