It is total escapism for teens. Meyer barely describes Bella so girls can "slip" into her character and pretend to be here.

As a literary piece of work its crap. But, as someone has pointed out, its only become popular because of the film. Good work Robert Pattinson...

Sorry, but trying to argue that Twilight discusses any deep issues seems flawed to me...and the ones that it does (accidentally) end up covering are extremely negative....

You defended Twilight, and I was VERY tempted to neg, but I like you so I won't. The thing I must disagree with is that porn is not really designed to be escapism, just a sexual outlet for people to use to be aroused, and noone tries to defend it, it's just functional. I don't think Meyer actually makes it that sexually forward - she is a mormon putting her silly dream onto paper with characters she actually thinks are good
whaa? Twilight is ridiculously sexual. Sure, it's coded, but it's pretty much purely about sex. I would say it's just as sexual as a porn film, just in a more symbolic way. I bet more teenage girls have got themselves off over twilight than porn, anyway...

    Is Meyer actually a mormon?

Also a very valid point. And porn doesn't have 49572959282592195929409920501x10 references to how beautiful the male characters are....

    Agreed. Twilight is insanely sexual.

And yes, Meyer is a Mormon....

Nah, it replaces it with how "big" they are instead :teehee:

He didn't. That the film makers fault.

In the book, Edward doesn't do that. They discuss him being a vampire when they are driving home from Port Angeles. Also when they are having lunch in the cafeteria.
Where else would people reveal like that? I know I have my deepest conversations surrounded by immature classmates.

If they did it better, then teenage girls would read them and love them. The fact is they don't, so obviously they're not tapping into anything major. Sure, they maybe good books, almost certainly better than Twilight, but if they were better than twilight at tapping into female sexuality, then they would be more popular than twilight, simple as that.

Hardly. How many people your age, outside of your course, have read any High Literature books, yet I doubt you would argue that trashy literature does things better than them.

Popularity doesn't mean that they do things well. As I said, the fact that Twilight is so popular, and the fact you don't know of the other works, shows how badly read our generation has become.

There is a reason why Gothic literature is generally more popular with women than men. It's just a shame it's no longer as popular as it once was.

Lestat was the first vampire I knew. He rocks!
Lestat is pretty damn amazing, though I always preferred Louis. Pity she went the way she did with the books at the end, but it was an interesting yarn.

Even if you ignore how afwul the books are and the wrong messages they send out to niave and immature girls...

Stephanie Meyer donated a hell of a lot of money earned from the series to the Mormon Church, who used said money to stop Proposition 8 which prevents gay marriage in California. -_-

Except obviously my argument was never about Twilight being good literature or skilled writing.

And yes, popularity obviously means they do something well. Nothing to do with literary technique, but to do with being able to percieve what girls want- to dismiss Twilight's success as a fluke is to dismiss the psychological needs and desires of teenagers today.

Whether the readers of twilight are poorly read is irrelevent. This isn't about whether a book is a good work of literature- this is about a book tapping into this massive undercurrent of female sexuality. And you can protest all you want that other books can do this just as well- but if they can, then why don't they? The reason the gothic genre is unpopular is because most of its seminal works are in language which is now updated, and isn't going to appeal to readers who are just looking for escapism and thrills, not a difficult read.

The fact is, the books you're promoting may be good books. That doesn't mean they can connect with teenage girls.

    Absolutely I would.

Yeah, my official position as an English student is 'what's Twilight?'

Unless I'm going off on a rant like this one.

Oh my God. They DO do it better, it's just stupid teenage girls too freakin' horny and desperate for a boyfriend to realise that there is proper literature out there.

If you think twilight is a reflection of female sexuality, you seriously need to put the book down and try and experience life.

    To all Twilight fans:
Get a vibrator, go to a library and find something worthy of being read.

Are you saying that classic lit that's not read much is better at connecting with and grasping the attention of teenage girls than twilight? Do you understand how little sense that makes?

This isn't about 'proper literature' and 'good literature'. Get off the bandwagon and read my argument properly and you'll see that. This is nothing to do with how 'good' twilight is.

I'm not sure many librarians would be too happy about vibrator-wielding twilight fans roaming the aisles

Also OP I take offense to your comparison of Twilight "Saga" and video games

I agree with the people who are saying there is sexuality in twilight, but it is ridiculously tame and not very sexual
