It was -12 here the night before last and that was the first evening we'd switched the heating on all term. Man up.

I don't think you're going to get a very good answer beyond "hurr durr".
If the whole house is well insulated, it might be cheaper to heat the whole house to a lesser level rather than heating a specific room to a moderate level. If you're heating a specific room you'd have to seal that room off and not open the door as nature will be trying to reach thermal equilibrium. Of course, your student house probably isn't well insulated so the relevancy is arguable.
Personally my house has it on 7am to 9am so it's nicer to get up in the morning and then whenever it's really cold and someone is cheeky enough to sneak the heating on. If it's that cold those ****ty halogen heaters aren't a bad idea. They uses masses of electricity but at least they only try to radiate heat at a specific area and not the whole damn room.
