Some excellent lists posted by members. I can't think of anything to add except Akira. It changed everything for manga and it's an amazing movie in itself.

I do like Gattaca. One of my favourites of all time.

I like 2001 - the quality of the production make it hard to believe the film was made in the 1960s!

Dark Star! John Carpenters first feature. Makes you laugh then makes you think. V highly recommended.

also Silent Running - which according to Mark Kermode was the inspiration for Wall

Anything from a book by PK **** will have an interesting story.

      Minority Report
      Total Recall
      Bladerunner

2001 has to have a mention of course. For all the masterful directing and suberb quality (by modern standards, let alone a 60s film), my favourite thing about the movie is the science. People often excuse massive scientific errors in sci-fi by saying it's the only way to make it interesting and understandable. Here we have a film that manages to be realistic, but takes that beyond mere consistency with reality - it's the stark, austere realism that makes this film so stunning. The effect is carried on to the end so smoothly it passes right through even the most bizarre and fantastic circumstances. The end result is not just a movie, but a profound spiritual experience.

I wouldn't consider myself much of an anime fan. I can count the number of Japanese animations I've seen on one hand, which I think makes the fact Paprika left me speechless all the more impressive. It's disputable if it can be considered a true science fiction film, especially alongside films like 2001, and the 'science' explanations left me facepalming. That still didn't stop me watching it three more times in succession immediately after the first viewing. Despite the weaknesses in explanation, the concepts and creativity involved are breath-taking (bear in mind this was a few years before Inception), and it's this limitless exploration that makes this film unique. As much as the film mentions the potential and infinite possibilites of the mind in script, I think this is really communicated best by the unbounded imagination of the animation. No other film has so perfectly taken an everyday occurence to such entrancing levels of freedom. It's magic via mind via technology, and you must not die without having seen this film.

fr srs. He's been really quite lucky as far as film adaptations go. Blade Runner and Total Recall are both ****ing awesome and everything else I can think of is, at the very least, entertaining enough.

good film, backed hard (by someone that also isn't that into anime). As far as animated sci fi goes though, FANTASTIC PLANET, *****ES.

It's appalling that so few seem to have seen it.
