Then don't put it in, it's not expected that you would.
is there any way that they will find out e.g. if they was to ask for exam certificates (i have heard that uni's ask for certificates to show proof of the grades declared)

You wouldn't get a certificate for a U. It is not a grade or a qualification.
    Just don't put it down!

What about for specific units within an A-level that you got a U in?
I presume you have to put those to show how you got your final grade?
Because I got a U in one of my Maths papers. I have put it down on the form.
you don't have to put down your unit marks only your final grade unless the specific universities you are applying to ask for it or you want to (ie it strengthens your application), even though there is the sections for you to fill in
thats assuming it hasn't changed since last year

You're missing the point. You're not being deceitful here, there is nothing for them to "find out". You do not hold a qualification, and therefore you do not need to declare it. There is nothing to declare.

a U doesn't count as a qualification, so how could you include it?
