This, the F3 is an awesome drive. Also, OP I don't see why you'd want to go back to XP for other stuff. You won't notice a drop in performance with that rig, but you'll get a nicer UI and a few nice touches, (oddly, my favourite thing about Win7 is the ability to resize windows to half the screen to compare them).(Original post by somebody else)
As for the hard drive, the same drive is always recommended and for good reason: get the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB: it's only £40 and it's exceptionally fast, and a decent size.
Get 64-bit professional from software4students, (they don't sell home premium). It's stupidly cheap, and although 64-bit might not make a difference now you will benefit later when you add more RAM.
