    As for the hard drive, the same drive is always recommended and for good reason: get the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB: it's only £40 and it's exceptionally fast, and a decent size.
    This, the F3 is an awesome drive. Also, OP I don't see why you'd want to go back to XP for other stuff. You won't notice a drop in performance with that rig, but you'll get a nicer UI and a few nice touches, (oddly, my favourite thing about Win7 is the ability to resize windows to half the screen to compare them).

    Get 64-bit professional from software4students, (they don't sell home premium). It's stupidly cheap, and although 64-bit might not make a difference now you will benefit later when you add more RAM.
