I would like to initiate some General Discussion over who is the preferred comedian: Ian Hislop or Paul Merton?

Who would you prefer to invite to your dinner table? Who makes you laugh more? Who is funnier? Who is wittier? etc. etc. etc.
    Ian.
He knows a great deal about very interesting things.
He's been in a position of power.

And his comedy appeals to me more

Paul Merton, clearly. He's actually funny - Ian Hislop makes cutting and richly deserved remarks about politicians but that doesn't make them funny. It makes me cringe when the audience laugh at what clearly isn't a joke. However, Paul Merton can do the same with jokes or a bit of banter. Takes himself a wee bit less seriously than Ian Hislop, too, I think.

(I love watching them both, btw, but I just prefer Merton as a comedian. You could never have one without the other.)

Ian Hislop as usually I find his jokes and political digs funnier and more outrageous. I don't really like Paul Merton's comic style.

Paul Merton makes funny facial expressions sometimes...

I think it'd have to be Hislop, unless Merton is telling a joke he just sits there like he's bored and never laughs at other peoples jokes.

I like Merton too, though - the documentary he did recently was very good.
