Would it be better if most of the people in there were pensioners... cos that's what the early mornings sessions were like when I went to them.
It would be better if most people in there were severely short-sighted...

Oh, I completely understand how that feels!
But you have to remember that when people go swimming, they're not there to look at your body. My pool has lane swimming for 2 hours per day (one hour in the morning, and one at night) where the adult pool is split into eight lanes, and you can book and use them. If you're worried about your body, you should go then (if your pool has it) as you're more likely to get experienced swimmers there who won't be bothered about what anyone else looks like.

Swimming is excellent for toning up, though, I found that out for myself- and am very pleased that I made the first step!

Wear a full costume, you can find ones that aren't too skimpy like bikinis, but as I said, nobody will be judging you in that way, anyway.

Male and Female has nothing to do with it. Anyone can feel self conscious no matter your sex. A woman wears a tight body suit, a man revealing shorts. Think how that would be for a male. Not only women feel self conscious. People don't understand being self consciousness when they have no issues in that area, not cause of their sex.
