The oldest written moral code that I'm aware of is the Code of Hammurabi, an ancient Babylonian system dating back to 1700BCE. It contains over 200 laws and indeed some of them relate to physical assault.

  • If a man puts out the eye of an equal, his eye shall be put out.
  • If a man knocks the teeth out of another man, his own teeth will be knocked out.
  • If anyone strikes the body of a man higher in rank than he, he shall receive sixty blows with an ox-whip in public.
  • If a freeborn man strikes the body of another freeborn man of equal rank, he shall pay one gold mina.

Interestingly the whole eye for an eye thing occurs in the bible too but this code is way older than mosaic law. The Hebrews probably took it from the Babylonians around the time they stole their creation myths.

So no, I don't think it qualifies as a modern, liberal idea.
