    So I have drawn a diagram and I share MrM's confusion re your confusion

    The integral between 0.5 and 4 gives you the area under the curve and then there is a clear rectangle to the left of that area that you need


    Have you clearly shaded the area that you need on your diagram

    Ive just realised where ive gone wrong! I thought the the bit in the question where it said "coordinate axis" meant that you leave out the rectangle out! I understand completely! Thanks brb while i work it out

    The coordinate axes (plural) are the lines x = 0 and y = 0.

    Ah yes!, for the red area i got 2 and for the orange I got 3/2. So the total area is 7/2.

    If i was given this question in an exam how do you think is the best way to approach it? Is it vital that i show the examiner the sketch anyway?

    That answer is right and I think you will need the sketch and the examiner will appreciate it too.
