Yeah Kant isn't a good place to start...

Ethics: I like Peter Singer's stuff and how he presents it.
Political: mmmm maybe get a starter book. I have Swift's "Political Philosophy". 's good.

Also, it's not a book but look up Just War theory. It's a good example of how philosophy can still be relevant in modern life.

Plato's Republic is a good one, and I'd also recommend Confucius for an alternative viewpoint. Perhaps look up Albert Camus and Neitzche too.
Michael Sandel also did a great series of lectures which I watched when doing political philosophy in class, you'll find them on YouTube.
