I did some charity work in a poor village in the Dominican Republic last summer. One day a few of us were sitting around after lunch when three five-year-olds came up to us with the bottom half of a 2-litre Coke bottle. On closer inspection this contained a huge tarantula (not as big as some of the ones being shown on this thread, but still pretty big!), which they'd managed to coax out of its hole and catch.

We were obviously quite surprised, so we told them to take it away lest it escape, so instead they tipped it out on the ground and stamped on it. In bare feet. One of the most surreal things I've ever seen!

Camel spider? Seen some of those in Kuwait and Basra, ran like a little girl to get away.

edit: Did anyone watch that insect dissection on BBC4 the other week. They explained why insects can only grow to a certain size.

Still nowhere near as terrifying as this work of pure devilry.....
If I saw that in my house, I wouldn't have 2nd thoughts about burning my house down.

Imagine if it went behind your bed and you couldn't find it No sleep.

The size of a human face. Its legs, which have unique daffodil-yellow markings, span a massive 20cm (eight inches).
