If I knew they had knives it would be completely different, I would probably pick something up and throw it at them, e.g. a brick and hope it hit one of them somewhere where it would atleast knock them out so the rozzers could do their job. I would most certainly not stand and watch.
Doubt it, if it happened as quickly as OP said you wouldnt have a chance to pick up ****

That's the thing; you wouldn't know if they had knives until you fought with them - if you give them what they want they have no reason to bring out any weapons but if you, as you say, look for a ****ing fight then nothing stops them from reaching into their pockets and cutting you up. I'll say it again, martial art skills are useless in reality if you're outnumbered and even more so if they're armed; this isn't a Jackie Chan film. Unless you've been trained rigorously to deal with situations like these, it won't work.

But I agree with at least shouting or getting their attention somehow.

Why didn't you run and call the police? DW , it's normal to freeze.

What about calling the police ASAP?
I'd definitely have called the police. But, I just thought incase they don't get there in time, I'd want some kind of evidence etc.

Thanks everyone for all your responses.
With hindsight i should have immediately called the police, as for recording the attack on my phone...
It all happened so quickly and i was really shocked with what i was actually seeing that recording everything wouldn't have come across my mind. It also wouldn't have helped that it was dark and the camera on my phone isn't too good, although some evidence is definitely better than no evidence.

One thing that really shocked me and i was so disappointed by, was that literally seconds after the attack a police van drove by along the road. The hooded thugs were still visible running away and that guy was standing in the middle of the road shouting and waving desperately, and the police van just ignored him and drove on. I just couldn't believe that...

That's what concerned me most of all; what you did or what actually happened isn't as important to me as the fact that the police van not only saw the three hoodies running off, but also saw this guy waving and shouting for help and drove on anyway - sounds despicable to say the least. If you get the chance to file a report, mention the van. Even if you didn't see the reg, the police should know where their cars have been at all times as they're usually tracked, and they can work from there.

You've done nothing wrong. And I guarantee you, 95% of people on here would've done the same even if they make bold claims behind their screens. I'm sure I would!

Calling the police would have been the best action, jumping in would probably have been the worst in that scenario. I can't comment on the police driving past, although I'm pretty sure if they will have had a reason.

I would have screamed as loud as I could, and sprinted in circles near them, if they decided to approach me, I would run away.

Think about it, you'd draw so much attention to yourself they'd be distracted and worry about you drawing attention to them, not only this they'll be heavily confused as to why a grown man is screaming and running in circles. Win-win. Keep this **** in mind.

Even though I'm about 6'4 and could throw a good punch, I would always be hesitant to get myself involved in these situation - purely because you never know what those criminals might have on them. They might have knives or worse and especially as I would have been outnumbered.

I have no special skills of unarmed combat, so I would advise to shout and try to make yourself sound menacing/bigger than you are and/or call the cops.

No sane person would ever go wading in fists flying while outnumbered and potentially out-armed to save somebody you don't know. There are just an infinite number of scenarios that could have led to the event and who's to say they won't just turn on you straight away. I'd just call the police, try and look for as many details as possible (skin colour, clothing, build, distinguishing features) and either move on or wait for them to move on then go in to apply first aid if necessary.

Basically, i went to the gym yesterday and when i finished it was late at around 10pm. As i was making my way back towards the bus stop i noticed 3 hooded guys cross the road ahead of me. I was playing some music on my phone at the time and luckily spotted them, so i stopped and quickly put my phone away. As i reached the main road ahead of me, i heard a man screaming and shouting for help. I saw those 3 guys attack this poor guy who was on his own waiting at the bus stop. One of them grabbed him and the guy was trying to get away, the other two threw a punch at him and kicked him. At this point he was on the main road and luckily a motorist noticed and stopped close by. The guys noticed and quickly ran away down a side road. The man who got out the car shouted something at the guy who got attacked before driving off, a police van also drove past but completely ignored the guy despite him frantically waving and shouting.
The guy ran up to me, shouting that he got attacked although he couldn't speak English properly. He looked at me and asked me if i speak Punjabi, to which i replied no but i tried asking him if he was alright. He suddenly ran off along the main road to look for help i guess.

I feel really bad about this as i saw it happen and i did nothing to help him. It all happened so quickly in around 10 to 20 seconds or so and i just completely froze with shock as i couldn't believe what was happening.

One half of me, said i should have stepped in and tried to help that poor guy. As would i have liked it if i were being beat up and a passerby just stood there and watched. But as i had just come out of the gym i was exhausted and my body was aching so i would have been in no condition to fight. Standing at 5 foot 7 i'm not exactly big and neither am i skilled at fighting. Also there were 3 guys and they were quite tall and intimidating, chances are if i did get involved the moment that guy had an opportunity to escape he would have run off as he had no intention of fighting. Leaving me on my own to fight with 3 guys who could have had anything on them like knives.

I can't help but feel so guilty especially when i saw the cut on the guy's nose where one of them punched him and the look of shock and fear in his eyes.
I feel as though i could have prevented or stopped this attack on him, if only i had the courage to jump in and defend him, instead of standing there like an idiot. But on the other hand, if i did get involved chances are i could have got seriously hurt myself. Also, even if i did manage to beat them guys up, the thing that worries me is that they appear to be from the local area. As i always go through that area and i normally wait at that bus stop on my own late in the evening/night they could plan to get me back with a few more of their friends.

Even though, i didn't get physically hurt this experience has left me feeling a little shaken, as i always wait at that very bus stop when i'm tired and heading back from the gym. And 9 times out of 10 i'm always on my own and it's very quiet around that area late at that time. The thing is that could have so easily have been me that got attacked.
I think from now on i'm going to make sure i go earlier and make my way back home before it gets late.

This whole experience has been bothering me and is constantly in the back of my head. I just can't help but feel really guilty for that poor guy. I feel like such a pathetic coward as i should have done something.

What should i have done? What would you have done in my situation?
Create a new account and name it 'Flaccid Snake'. You are not 'solid'. Also quit the gym, you are not man enough to use it's services.

Your title has also been changed to Ms and you are required to hand in your testicles to the nearest hospital within 5 days for a vagina replacement, if you don't then you will be escorted by the Police to the nearest hospital by force if necessary.

    Have a pleasant day Ms.

I would like to think I would have stepped in and tried to get them off. Like my Dad says if you can talk your way out of a fight do it, if not fight ten times harder. Or my Mum on the other hand says throw the first punch.

I'd listen to my Dad's advice first.

Personally though I can't say, I would have to be in that situation to tell you. Cause what I think I would do might be completely different to what might happen. Anyway don't dwell on it the past is the past and you can't change it now. Just take precaution in the future and don't put yourself in a position where you aren't comfortable.

I certainly won't let an innocent get mugged that's for sure.

True, I'm risking my life definitely but I won't be able to let it happen. I'm no tough guy with very limited street fighting and any other martial arts and would definitely go down in a punch, but it does not sit right with me to ignore it.
