I don't do it unless someone does it to me first, in which case it feels rude if I don't... Unofficial text message etiquette?

If I'm texting a female I usually put an x on the end :o: Texts can often appear highly impersonal, so it's just a more friendly way of ending what otherwise looks like a rather blunt message.
Mind I would never, ever do it to a guy.

My mum writes 'xoxo' at the end of messages. Apparently the 'o's are hugs to go with the kisses.
None of my friends do this - is it just an 'adult trying to use text-speak' thing?

I don't get it either. I usually put them at the beginning of messages.

I find it very annoying and odd that people end their message with an X. Makes me cringe and think why?

Because since everyone else does it you look rude when you don't...x

I've realised it depends the level of friendship I am on with someone hence:

Best friends = no kisses, there are too many texts sent that are just banter/jokes that don't require kisses and they know I love them anyway

Friends/becoming friends = one kiss because I feel rude not too especially they end their texts with a kiss

Male conquests = two kisses, hubba hubba.

I only put 'X's in birthday texts or to make fun of the person I'm talking to.

It's weird. I don't do it because I wouldn't kiss everyone in real life!

The Americans do that. Over there xxx is considered to indicate that you want to hump that person's brains out, in part due to the association with porn but mostly because of the formality of their teenage courtship etiquette (dating, single-sex friendship groups and all that).

I've also been putting XXX OOO in birthday cards since I was a little kid, long before the invention of texting, it's not that uncommon.

    Not all girls 'X'.
I used to do it, but only when people did it to me. Now I can't be bothered with the 'X' at the end.

I just do it out of habit but I noticed my U.S friends don't and I feel a bit awkward if they're thinking I'm weird for doing it

I find it awkward giving some people x's. I reserve them for close friends and family etc :yep:

I never do it. I'm not going to waste valuable characters in a text.

I only do it if the person is someone that I would kiss in real life

So, unless the text is work related that would be pretty much everyone that I text

Even some work related ones tbh

Think of it as "blowing a kiss" rather than an actual kiss

Because texting is a weird medium of communication. You don't have the aids of tone and facial expressions to give more context to what you say. Things like "x" and "" lighten the mood of a message in the same way a reassuring smile would in face-to-face communication.
