I use my laptop for 5-6 hours a day (because I do all my school work on it).

    Just wondering....

I leave my laptop on 24 hours 7 days a week mostly....(without putting it into sleep)

I don't have any issue with heat and it is 2.5 years old.
I do the exact same as you, I leave it on.

But when I close the laptop it goes into sleep automatically, which is pretty decent I guess.

Which laptop brands do you all have out of curiosity?
And what sort of price range
EDIT : Asking because I'm wondering which laptop to purchase for uni. Reliability is my main concern, it will be left on mostly all day and put on sleep when I sleep.
    Thinking of going ThinkPad

I leave it on all night to get company when I sleep
I get lonely at night, so knowing the bbc 24 news is running in the background makes me feel still connected with the world.

I used to keep it on 24/7 (and on sleep when not using it), but after a while I would find it runs funny/lags/slows down etc. So now I try and avoid that and usually turn it off at night. Does this not happen to anyone else?

Although I usually had it on sleep when programmes were still running - so that may have been part of the reason.

That's so cheap for a Thinkpad (unless it's a Thinkpad Edge?) I really want a Thinkpad for when I do my PGCE but the "proper" Thinkpads are like £800+

I would love to get one new for £450! Any advice?

Well for starters, anybody with a Thinkpad has instant respect from me. Cannot say that for almost all other laptop models.

EDIT: Cheapest brand new L-Series of Lenovo GB starts from £549.

However there are some Edge series going for around the 350-400 mark on eBay, with second generation i3:

Mines nearly three years old and it's a Compaq 615. It used to get so hot that it would genuinely burn the paste from the heat sync causing it to not boot. I fixed this by putting it in the oven at about 200 degrees, crazy! I re-installed Windows recently and now it's sleeping more and staying cooler, I tend to leave it on but it sleeps a lot of the time. I'd say it was active for maybe five hours a day.

X61 - They were about £800-1200 new when I bought it. Got a real bargain.
