Hell can certainly be used as a threat. 'You have to do this or you're going to Hell!' Just the same as 'If you don't shut up I'm going to rape you!'(Original post by Chrosson)
In a roundabout way, I think we agree.
You're absolutely correct, it's not ok to call people names, just as it isn't ok to wish nasty things on them - there is an obvious set of people who find wishes of rape highly upsetting. Just as there is an obvious set of people who find wishes of going to hell highly upsetting. It's interesting to note that you easily tweak this sentence to apply to rape - "Hell in a religious persons mind is an awful place, and they are wishing that upon someone, whether they believe it or not is neither here nor there".
I just thought it was initially odd that you had one rule for one thing ('it's just trolling'), one for another. I do think we disagree on how to decide what the of some words is.
This distinction is very clear, but I'm fairly sure hell can never be a threat? Again, I think we're agreeing that things intended hurt someone's feelings are all bad?
But the clarification I was trying to make earlier, is that a troll comment is not the same as a threat, there is a distinction. Whilst both are offensive, they are not one and the same.
