We can watch people being killed in 18 rated films on tv, we can see dead bodies of real people on the news, but we can't see naked people have sex on a computer.
Dead bodies on the news are not there for your gratification. It is not the same as watching pornography ... and no wants to stop you or the general public from watching porn. The aim is to prevent children from viewing it.

You think letting children see violence and dead bodies is ok but naked people doing a natural thing is going to be more harmful to them? Ok...

You, yourself, said 18 rated films. Those images are not meant for children either.

That's my point - Children will still be exposed to that stuff. Most kids have a tv in their bedrooms. Why are we not banning 18 rated films from being shown on tv?

Well, there is a watershed to prevent that and also TV's do not work like the internet. The ease of an opt-in service for the internet cannot really be compared to that of the T.V. Even if your analogy was apt, it doesn't mean that one harmful form of entertainment shouldn't be restricted from children because all of the other forms cannot be restricted equally.

on the other hand.. the LGBT community are always the ones who suffer under these sorts of filters..

As inverably LGBT related pages are placed in the 'banned' pile...

I remember at university not being able to look up 'transsexual' without massive warnings comming up 'you are looking at a page with adult content, be warned this may not be tolerated by the university' etc. etc.

Its also been seen in public libraries, where the words 'gay' and 'lesbian' were cut off.. - and in schools, where children have had to research LGBT things, only to find informative/normal sights, banned by the filters..

So it may only be a small issue.. but if households are now by-default filtering out LGBT pages... how many young vunerable gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans kids will that leave without information, support, and resources?

(all talking very hypothetically here... but its always a worry when people start to filter the internet)
I agree with blocking gay/****** porn, not lesbian though.

Disclaimer : this is all speculation

Can porn ever be a good thing? Obviously for recreational purposes but would having an outlet for sexuality have positive effects? I read an article a while ago about how researchers reckon pedophiles may molest children because they can't get child porn so with no safe way to deal with their desires it comes out in ugly ways (remember not all pedophiles are child molesters). Would a ban on porn lead to more sexual assault, aggression, peeping toms and stuff like that? I understand that they're proposing an opt in service but who wants to sit their parents or partner down and ask to be put on the porn list?
Eh? Safe?! You do realise that to get at child porn, children have to be involved in making it, and I am assuming you're not condoning that?

I just wish the government, and society in general, would stop ****ing attempting to hide the reality of human sexuality from children. It's kind of ridiculous. What harm will actually come to these children as a result of viewing such things? :lolwut: If they actively search them out, why should they be prevented from seeing the relatively harmless images?

I can easily see how society being more open with the young about sexuality would result in healthier attitudes all round.

I can see and understand why such things should be blocked however would we say the same about how rap music leads to an influence of violence or how graphic video games cause violence in children? And when you think about it, violence has always been around and always will be, so is it fair to blame the content itself for someone's actions?

I'm lob-sided here but it's worth blocking to see if it does work.

The trouble is, just like the gun restrictions didn't stop killings on the street and banning fox hunting hasn't stopped foxes having to be killed, once you ban (or block, or censor in any way) something, lifting the censor is incredibly difficult.

Far better to examine the likely effects up front, view the factual evidence available and only limit people's choices for a proven and socially desirable result.
