Professions where being gay is a no-no Watch

We seem to think that gay people are equal, like everyone else, etc. but there still appear to be professions where being gay is practically prohibited - at least until you are close to retirement.

I'm thinking:

- Most male sports: footballer, rugby player, boxer, etc.
- Actors (primarily action)
- Boy-band members (especially when they initially form)
- Cabinet ministers
etc.

Is it not wrong that in such professions there is pressure and, possibly coercion, to refrain from being gay?
What a silly thread.

Sports - loads of professional sportspeople have come out as gay.

Acting? Not absolutely riddled with gay people at every level? Puh-lease.

Boy bands? Don't be fooled by all those fake girly-love numbers.

Cabinet ministers - there have already been quite a few.

If you want to troll, at least try and come up with something that has a shred of truth to it.

There really shouldn't be any professions where be gay is prohibited or merely a problem. It is a sexually orientation and doesn't have any influence on the job one is performing.

What a weird/out-of-character response from a Guardianista.

So you honestly think that it's fine and dandy being an openly gay footballer and that there are almost none in active practice in England because they all happen to be straight?

Can you name at least a handful of young gay actors in leading blockbuster roles in recent times?
Oookay. Some of these are TV as well but all are very well known.

Zachery Quinto
Rupert Everett
Wilson Cruz
Chris Colfer
Guillermo Diaz
John Barrowman
Russell Tovey
Jesse Tyler Fergeson
Jim Parsons
Neil Patrick Harris
Ezra Miller
Nathan Lane
Jodie Foster

Not to mention Ian Mckellen, Allan Cumming, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, Melissa Etheridge etc. Not young, but certainly gay actors.

Just google 'gay actors'.

Weird that you concentrate on gays rather than lesbians. Would you not think that lesbians would have the same problems if it was to do with sexual orientation, therefore it's maybe more to do with effeminacy than being gay?

Didn't answer my question at all. Re-read the parameters of the question and then come back to me.

Then I named young gay actors, at least a handful of which have been on the big screen...

How is that not answering the question?....

None, really. Maybe some banterous, macho careers in the City like investment banking or something. My uncle was a banker and half of your career is devoted to defending your pride from 'banter'.

All of those are terrible examples and have no premises. There is no law which says there can't be gay cabinet ministers simply because there is none. Similarly:

Gareth Thomas - full back for Wales International Rugby Team
Orlando Cruz - Puerto Rican boxer who's won the majority of his fights
George Takei - Captain Sulu for Star Trek, also big LGBT advocate
And boy bands are pretty self explanatory.

The only reason you've made this thread is the same reason you make any other thread relating to homosexuality - you ask stupid, almost rhetorical, questions in a bid to get people to scramble to say otherwise simply to prove the normality of homosexuality, yet you complain about homosexuality not being socially accepted. Make up your mind.
I don't know much about any of the others, but regarding George Takei: he came out in 2005. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Takei#Personal_life

He wasn't revealing his sexuality to the world in 1965, although Gene Roddenberry (the director) knew he was gay. However, Gene Roddenberry reportedly originally wanted there to be openly gay characters on the bridge in the first series (the network said no way!) as well as a representative of another species (Spock), a female (Uhura), a human of Japanese descent (Sulu) and a human of Russian descent (Chekov), so I think that reflects the personal progressiveness and commitment to equality of the Star Trek team, than the acting world in general, back in 1965.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_3512332.html

Mind you, the world has changed a hell of a lot since 1965, and it's a lot more accepting.

Close to the disbanding/retirement of the band (see Boyzone and Westlife) but most certainly not initially/for a while.

Do you really think One Direction's management/publicists would be all fine and dandy if one of them said 'I am gay and I don't want to have to hide it'?
I think the hordes of fanfiction writers would have a field day

Pretty much any 'macho'/ male dominated jobs- like truck drivers, pilots, engineer, CEO, fisherman, bin men etc.

Then you have ones like doctors- you wouldn't really want a gay doctor inspecting your bottom for piles or feeling your testicles for cancer or something... :/

Actors and boy bands I don't think are much of a problem, but on sports I agree. Some people have brought up Gareth Thomas, but I'm not sure that's really a fair example. He didn't come out publicly until his career was nearly over; he was also one of the best players in the world at his peak, as well as a Welsh sporting national hero. If he found it hard to come out, I imagine it would be a hundred times harder for a less prominent player.

- Cabinet ministers
Chris Smith, Labour Culture Secretary, was the first "out" gay cabinet minister in 1997 but if there was a person in the UK who thought Norman St John Stevas (Maggie's first Leader of the House of Commons) was straight, then he is probably still safely in a padded cell.

Lord Mandelson held quite a few cabinet offices during the last government and no one really batted an eyelid that he was gay.

edit: Anyway I don't think that being a homosexual means that you can't do 'macho' jobs. A guy I used to go to school with came out the closet and he is working as builder. However if you are effeminate or camp then you will have a hard time in overtly macho jobs.

For everyone saying sport, it isn't all sports,

Darren Young, a WWE Wrestler, came out in August 2013 and people only cared for a few days to congratulate him, now no one cares.

Male sports isn't the problem, it's dumbass fans too stupid to accept someone regardless of their sexuality. As I would imagine is the case in say Football or Rugby.

I'd have no problem with a gay doctor actually, in fact I knew loads at the med school where I went to University. It is a bit ridiculous that you think they'd be turned on by checking for piles.
