Group work

Student politics

Turning up to a lecture at 9:15am (having had to leave home at about half 7) and the lecturer cheerfully informs you that you're watching a ****ing Youtube video today, a link to which he'll put on the student portal after the lecture.

Lecturer's posting their PDFs with a coloured background that I can't change on my computer .

Lack of feedback on our work from some of our modules for the very small amount of coursework that we do do.

One of my lecturers looks like someone I once slept with. It's really unsettling. I can't look him in the eye because he makes me feel uncomfortable.

Please, do join me in ranting about stupid things your university does.

Is it just my university, or do all universities like to set up online multiple choice quizzes to count as part of your final grade, and then not give the right answer as one of the multiple choices?! I'm actually getting so hacked off with it, it's only one of my modules it happens in, but it's infuriating. How are we expected to do well if none of the options are correct?
yeah thats happens a couple of times with us as well. what course do you do?

Hahaha some of these are hilarious, keep them coming!
Also, I agree with whoever it was that said about the long term and no reading week. I'm pretty much fucked at the moment, I'm like the walking dead!

Accountancy and finance, but I'm talking about my economics module in particular. What about you? Have you ever had a mark changed because of that issue?

The one thing that really pees me off about my uni is the fact that my department doesn't give Freshers their induction timetables until the Monday of Freshers' Week. Now I know the course is more important than socialising but when you've got a load of people moving far away from home, their friends and families etc you'd think they'd make it easier for them by letting them know when they're in so they don't miss out on the Freshers stuff that needs to be booked and can actually arrange things with their flatmates on other courses (who all know when they're in as far as I know). And then what about the people who literally need to know to sort out childcare or are local and have jobs?

I honestly don't see why they couldn't have the timetables ready earlier than that. They get roughly the same number of students every year and we're not grouped according to ability so just do a timetable for "group 1", "group 2" etc then put the students in the groups when you know who they are. They could easily get the timetables to us the week before if they did this, even the Friday before would have made a huge difference to how I was feeling that weekend.

And then of course it's the same story with exam results. They don't tell us when we can expect to get them until after the exams, then they change the date at the last minute and they tell us if we've passed/failed and then our marks a few days later. How can they know if we've passed/failed without knowing our marks!?

Dunno where to begin really. I do love university, but I do wish I went to a better one.

-The place is dead, in terms of social life. We have 1 bar, which no one goes to because it's nowhere near town.
-They pump funds into art courses like you wouldn't believe, give them more than half of the space in the university, whilst the rest of us struggle and sit in pre-war classrooms.
-The bursary/funding system. Why are students on a non-NHS course who already get more than 3 times the amount of money from student finance and have all the time in the world for a part time job (full time student my ass!), exclusively entitled to a £2000 fund (not a loan) when I struggle to pay my rent and eat? This one bugs me to no end.
-Because this is a small university and still in infancy, the lecturers use it like a revolving door. Only 2 of my lecturers have stayed throughout the duration of my course and it seems like every semester a good lecturer leaves.
-Limited student housing. This means that you're either gonna have to sort everything out at lightning speed if you don't want to live in accommodation.
-The location. I don't like this town.

Urgh yeah my uni is the same. First I was told I'd get my full timetable at my advisers appointment which was a pain, but understandable. Then I was told I'd get the full timetable (tutorials, computer labs etc) after my first lecture. Turns out I couldn't get the full timetable until after the first lecture for each course. Hardly ideal for my manager to have to wait 2 weeks for my availability, urgh!

As for the exam thing, they often know that you've definitely passed but don't know the exact mark because it needs to be double checked by an external examiner. I know it's annoying, but at least there is a valid reason for that one.

Oh that sucks! We only get one attempt (like, one whole attempt, even if the internet fails halfway through - attempt over) but we do get unlimited mock quizzes that have a lot of the same/similar questions. It just sucks when they don't provide the right answers for the multiple choice hahaha.

Academic:
I have 9am-6pm on Mondays with only 1 hour timetabled break at 1-2pm, so you have to hope the class finishes early (doing foundation year :ninja:).
Lack of checklist and examples for coursework in one of my modules.

In general:
10 minute walk from one end of the campus (where my halls are) to the other end (library).
Timetabling lectures in the crappy seminar rooms on the upper floor of the sports centre building (although it is the closest building to my halls).
Laundry is in a different building a couple of minutes walk away.
Keeping a gate locked which then means we have to walk on grass mud to reach the other gate.
Big queue in the shop all the time.
Windows XP! Can't stand that ****, it is 12 years old and is ancient now. Hurry up with the upgrade to Windows 7 (a small number of computers in the library and lecture rooms have it but the rest are stuck on XP).
Floodlights pointing at the bedroom windows, my side is the only one of all the halls to have this as this faces the main road. Very bright so I've resorted to covering up the window with paper every night and have also put paper around the curtain rail

I've not got that many, I love my uni overall but:
-Arts Hub take ages to process work and give it back to you.
-
And regarding this year
-4000 word essays. Absolute nightmare for someone like me whose slow at writing. And yes I have started early.
-Timetable this year- 9-5 on a Tuesday with a 2 hour break and then nothing the rest of the week. End up being so bored most of the rest of the day when I'm the only one in.

But what about people on the borderline who either scrape or just miss out on 40%? If an external examiner changes their marks then that'll change whether they passed/failed and we've been told the pass/fail is for certain not provisional like it is if you get told your coursework mark before it's been externally moderated.

Before I got my first year results I assumed it was due to anonymous marking (we write our names in the corner then fold it over & seal so the only thing identifying us visible during the marking process is our student number), as we were told there'd be a pass list published on the ELP/posted in the law school with just student numbers on that we'd need to check and then we'd get an email with our actual mark a few days later. So I assumed it was because they published the pass list as soon as they'd finished external marking, then it took a few days to match up the student numbers and set up the emails to go out. However when we got our first year results we got emailed with whether we'd passed or failed each module so they'd already matched us up when they published the pass list.
