Generalising, men are just as ridiculous when it comes to talking about football. I spend as much time talking about football on a forum as a woman does reading stupid magazines. Two sides of the same coin

I don't. I mean I get sick of hearing about celebrities looking for baby toys and stuff. I'm happy for them when they announce it but I don't go out of my way to find out. I just hear, I'm like "good for them" and move on.

In psychology I was told a theory that we have celeb gossip and tv programs because they stimulate the parts of our brain associated with socialising and connections. If you get an obsession (and I'm talking you're a stalker) with a celeb you have practically convinced yourself that the celeb is part of your social group. Although the celeb doesn't know you, because you know as much about them as you would know about your real friends, your brain tells you that they do know you/definitely want to know you.

Basically I think we've created gossip because it stimulates part of our brain and makes us feel good. In a similar way I'd say we developed sports because they are competitive and we like that feeling of watching or being part of a competition.

I'm terrible at celeb stuff, my friends could name actors in a film and I wouldn't have a clue who they are! I don't mind their gossip as long as I don't have to join in to be accepted!

But that is because football is important. Will Mata go to Man Utd for the reported £37million fee?

Can't say I've ever got myself a celebrity gossip magazine, it never has interested me. Not all girls are into that just like not all guys are into sports.

Don't get your hopes high. You asked the whole community this question, surely we would comment on it.

    Anyways on the serious note.
Women are born gossipers, they enjoy drama, scandals, idolising or commenting on the lives of other women specially the famous ones. It's phycological and there is nothing wrong in it unless they harm the second person in some way, after all, why many men are interested in Sports celebrities and gym?
So, not every woman does this, neither is it bad but if it annoys you so much, don't have acquaintance with such ladies, I agree, they can be a real pain with all the chattering and useless research over a celebrity.
I agree to a large extent. Many men are fascinated with celebrities - it's just that they're iconic male celebrities, rather than female. However, unlike women, most men do not gossip or not to nearly the same extent. I'd change the question to: why do so many women enjoy gossiping?

It's a reason why arguments amongst my female friends last for ages, or indefinitely. They never say things to each others' faces. Even after they've 'made up', the pernicious comments continue :P Guys sort out their differences very quickly.
