    How can anyone forget Joe Cole's goal against Sweden in the 2006 World Cup? That was incredible.

    Argentina's Maxi Rodriguez goal against Mexico also stands out for sheer control and technique, in the 2006 World Cup.

    Netherlands' van Bronckhorst goal against Uruguay in the semi finals of the 2010 World Cup for sheer accuracy and power. Bullet of a strike from the captain.

    These are the only two World Cups I've seen live. I don't remember watching many games in the 2002 World Cup.

    Ronaldinho v England 2002
    Zanetti v England 1998

    They stick out for some reason - epic moments. But I guess the only reason they've not been mentioned is because they were scored against england.

    You say Zanetti's but miss out Owen's which was in the same game and far superior.

    Owen's was very good as well, no doubt. I just thought the Argentina goal was very clever so it sticks with me for some reason.

    The final pass is a thing of beauty, as well as the finish but the best things about this goal are the way Cannavaro charges out after heading the ball and the run from Del Piero to get to the box.

    Grosso's was better imo just for amazing exectution under such pressure in the context of the game.
    Broke my heart tbh, as a Germany supporter (family are German), but credit where it is due. That was a great Italian side.

    and lol at the first Pele one, I always presumed he scored it. When they're showing highlights, they always cut it off just before you see it go wide. Considering he missed, I'm surprised people still make such a big deal out of it, by today's standards it is nothing special.
    I think people make a big deal out of it because it's kind of brilliant, even though it did miss. It's not like people trying to copy that trick nowadays and scoring, he was the first person to even try it, whilst at a World Cup.

    This, from Rob Smyth, sums it up more eloquently than I ever could;
    The missionary position. Nowadays it is assumed once a month under something resembling duress, but once upon a time it was the most exciting thing that has happened to anyone, ever. So were sliced bread, the wheel and the strap on. But innovation and invention evaporate almost the moment they occur. That should be considered when we try to contextualise Pele's famous near misses in the World Cup of 1970: the one from the halfway line against Czechoslovakia and this dummy of the Uruguayan goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz in the semi-final. It seems relatively commonplace by modern standards – he dummies the keeper; big whoop-whoop – but at the time it was a staggering feat of audacity and imagination, as unexpected as guitars in dance music or a non-linear film. And no matter how many times Pele makes a tool of himself by advertising Viagra or eulogising Nicky Butt, we should never lose sight of that.
