The only real difference is that you need to take out a student loan for a foundation year, whereas you can do an access course for free if you're 23 or under (if you're 24 or over then you take out a loan for the access course, but it is written off if you complete a degree). Doing an access course means having a smaller student loan to pay back.

No, that is wrong. You can do access courses in academic subjects too.

Odd. I did an OU certificate and got into all the universities I applied to, including UCL and Edinburgh - two of the best and most difficult universities to get into in the country.

      Hey

Are access courses still free for under 23s?

I am 19 and considering to do an access course.

Depends. Students aged 19-23 who have not previously completed a Level 3 qualification may be eligible for free tuition, speak to your college.

What do you mean by free tuition ? as in allowed to do the course for free without paying or signing up for the learner loan.

It depends, as I say - speak to your college, if you don't have a level 3 qualification then you may not be charged fees. It doesn't matter if you are or aren't charged fees because the Advanced Leaner Loan doesn't need to be repaid if you go to university anyway.
