I'm surprised by how many people say they would choose their own life over the child's...

but why should the car choose to save the child over your safety?
If an autonomous car had to either crash into a wall or hit the target then it would not be released to market anyway as it would be deemed unsafe. It would be far safer to have a human controlled car. The autonomous car in reality would either emergency brake or fail emergency brake and hit the child. If the car did brake and got hit from behind then it'd be their fault. If the car malfunctioned and hit the child then it'd be the fault of the manufacturer or owner depending on where liability is placed.

In answer to your question I wouldn't have to do anything as that car would never be released to market as it'd get nowhere near the required safety rating to be approved and thus this scenario won't happen.

I disagree that the car has responsibility for it's passenger, rather the passenger takes responsibility when they choose to use the car.

I'd swerve but purely on an instinctive basis.
