Not to split hairs, but aren't people who are obsessed with fandoms and comic books and stuff referred to as 'nerds', where academic achievers are referred to as 'geeks'?
I think there's a confusion. I was informed (by American family-friends) that in the US you can be a 'geek' if you know a lot about a certain subject (e.g. you can be a football geek, or a comic book geek or a history geek).

I think 'nerd' also tends to imply a lack of social skills.

    Who cares?

Using Harry Potter as an example, whether you only love the films, if you only like the books, or you're obsessed with everything to do with it, it doesn't make you a poser or a bad person to say you're a bit of a geek about Harry Potter.

I used to have this exact line of thought, but then I grew up.

I wish we could all get along like we used to in Middle School.

Ironic thing is a lot of the ''nerd'' stuff is very exciting.

For example, I've been well into my astronomy for a number of years. Always fascinated me, especially black holes, or the theories surrounding them.

You won't get more speed, more power, more mass, than goings on that are happening out there, yet it's classed as nerdy.

And Marvel comics are about people that are super fast or intelligent or strong.

As opposed to what - going down the pub and spouting off loads of crap that you read in the Daily Mail to some sad old drunk?

It's kind of the wrong way round. Nerdy stuff is pretty rock and roll in general once you actually look into it.
