Drivers - Do you drive with a dashcam?

Scroll to see replies

I don't currently drive, but if I eventually do in the future I will most definitely buy a dashcam. Excellent support for insurance claims and such, plus I've heard of many drivers get themselves out of hot water because of dashcam footage.

I will be getting a dashcam when I can drive to prove that I'm not the dangerous driver :auto:

Just wanted to gather opinions from younger drivers (majority demographic on TSR) regarding the use of dashcams as I'll be shortly writing a piece for TSR about why younger drivers should consider investing in a dashcam..... so I'll be keeping this thread as short as possible.

To anyone that doesn't know what a 'dashcam' is (short for dashboard camera), it's a small camera which you can attach to the front window of the car from the inside and therefore record the road ahead. I use this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-DrivePro-Video-Recorder-Built-In/dp/B00GRYT5QI and I've been impressed with the quality of the footage.

The rationale behind using one:
If you end up in a crash, you then have evidence of what happened ---> insurers can see that you were not at fault and therefore you keep your insurance costs (premiums) intact. It's a well known fact that younger drivers have really high insurance costs and therefore it's important to prevent those costs from rising even more after an accident!

Provided of course that you didn't cause the crash :ninja:, insurers widely accept dashcam footage as evidence for a claim---> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32622126

Would you feel safer with a dashcam after watching this video?

Do you guys think it's worth the hassle of setting up the camera every time for the sake of saving your insurance incase you end up in a crash which wasn't your fault? :hmmm:

Post below and I will use some replies here to base my article around!

Yo James!

Getting a dashcam hardwired is the best approach, no need to mess around with plugging in stuff into the cig socket everytime.

You gonna be leaving the dashcam in the car all the time?

As it's a Mobius hell yeah. Nice and small little things I was going to get one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/KOONLUNG-K1S-2-CHANNEL-GPS-RECORDING/dp/B00TM59NCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455815212&sr=8-1&keywords=K1s+dual

However the good people at "dashcamtalk" have told me to stay away, as there are many issues with the K1s' camera

I now know almost every thing I have to buy, EXCEPT this "add a fuse" thing I need to buy

2x Mobius New Version Wide Angle Lens C2 1080P HD Mini Action Camera

(Yes, the site sounds dodgy, but it's an authorised Mobius re-seller and it's cheap)

2 x Kingston (32GB) microSDXC Class 10 UHS-I 45MB/s Read Card with Adapter (Only do need Class 4, as it doesn't do any higher speeds, but hey the class 10 is cheaper than class 4)

2 x Add-A-Circuit Mini Blade Fuse Holder 20amp (Though Im not too sure about what to get here, and I think I need to ask some other people on another forum)

I intend to get one once I've got a new source of income sorted. Didn't want the hassle of fitting one to this car, but its better that I fix the faults it has than buying something else when I've just been made unemployed.

Will be hard wiring it into ignition, may end up with front and rear cameras I think. Don't want anything stuck to the screen either.

Hence the suction cup things. Tbh, it means that if I move car, I can remove all the actual hardware, and then I just have to pay for the (expensive) installation. Oh and the hardwiring kit I guess

Dash cams have become ubiquitous among daily driver tools. Increasing distractions and decreasing attention spans have made for dangerous, traffic-laden commutes. Thankfully, dash cams help provide irrefutable proof of fault in the event of an accident, and, while we don’t have quite as many insurance fraud cases here in the United States as abroad, rest assured that a proper car dash camera can shut those cons down, too.

Stop advertising your tat.
I know this thread is old however I think it's an important message. Looking at the poll from 2 years ago I can't believe that so few drivers use dash cams. This could provide evidence not only for your own crash but also other crashes or even other kinds of crime. You can get them so cheaply I just don't think there's any excuse not to have them front and back.
