    Thank you for your reply. I don't understand your workings though. This is a question for year 6 primary school students. I posted it here because there was no where else.
    I don't see how you got 2/7 from 5/7 or what you did there. Yes negative numbers thanks for the correction!

    No, multiply. The person (can't remember her name) eats 1/3, leaving 2/3. Then the guinea pig gets 2/7 of this 2/3 (which the question calls "the remainder", i.e. the bit left over after she has eaten her 1/3). As you know, of means multiply, so 2/7 * 2/3 = 4/21.

    Well we have an apple let's say it's cut into 21 pieces, now we know 1/3 is eaten by the human. This leaves 14 pieces left for the rabbit and guiena as 1/3*21=7, 21-7=14, hopefully you're with me there .

    Now we know 14/21 (2/3) is the amount of the apple left or 14 pieces, we also know that the rabbit has eaten 5/7 of the apple and the guiena pig 2/7.

    This means the 14 pieces leftover are distributed in a ratio of 5:2 (5/7 to the rabbit and 2/7 to the guiena pig). Now to work out what proportion the guiena pig recieves we do 2/3 * 2/7:

    Which should give you an answer of 4/21 (meaning if it were in pieces the guiena pig would eat 4 of the 21 slices). I don't like to post solutions but you sound like a teacher from your above reply.

    Just for clarification the "*" is a multiplication sign .

    I think this question is a little hard for most year 6's to be honest, so would only set it for those who are quite capable!
