Because open source means they must do it for free? Nope. Case in point RHE, SUSE.

Anyway, you've rather aptly described Microsoft more than Zend right there..

PHP I can host on pretty much anything I like, with almost any configuration.

Up until very recently, .NET - Windows via IIS.
It's literally bug fixes and security patches. Both things that should be provided for free. Always.

Because Microsoft totally does that. Oh wait, no. Service Contracts..

Zend are a company, they have to make money at some point. Starting to think you live in La La Land o.o

I haven't defended Microsoft in any way. Just said that Zend are a ****ing awful company. Plenty of other companies manage to make money without charging for security fixes.

I'm currently using codecademy.com to learn HTML, you can also learn JavaScript, PHP, C++ and loads of other languages on there. But I do find if you look on w3schools there's a lot of worded tutorials on there and looking at HTML for me, is a lot better than repeating it 3 times in a row. To see how you're going with a simple website use codepen.io to see your progress so far. It's great at live showing you what you're editing!

I have just finished my first website! The whole process took me a few hours, really. I used a feature-rich simple wordpress theme that was easily customizable. All I have to do was to add content and enjoy being a site owner
