A lady from HMRC has told me I'm going to jail for 5 years? WTF Watch

Sorry for the grammar errors, I am trying to type fast.

I got a phone call which was automated telling me to ring on this number from HMRC: 0161 354 7088. As stated, when I rang this number, the lady on the phone was very threatening in the end, telling me I'm going to go for jail for the maximum time of 5 years, which everything will get frozen: my driving licence, my phone, my bank account.

She said we have the documents here and in section so and so you have a tax deficiency where the income tax does not match on their file. After this, she told me not to talk because the phone is being recorded.

I am going to call the police now.

It's just a phone scam omg. Have a cup of coffee, eat a doughnut, relax… and email HMRC. :sigh:

If any "official" body tells you to ring your bank or HMRC back ring your mum instead. If someone pretending to be from your bank or from HMRC "answers" your mum's number it's obviously a scam.

Not sure if an 0161 number can be a premium line but I would check your phone bill just in case.

Are you familiar with the site "Who Calls Me?" - this clearly shows that the 0161 number is a scam line.

It would be worthwhile contacting Manchester police about this, it sounds like a solo, 'unprofessional' scam artist using a standard landline, BT will be able to help the police track it down. Note the "American lady" mentioned by several people, this is obviously one person or a small group of people doing a pathetic freelance con. Usually these things are run from Nigeria or Russia but this might be a local one.
