Is it possible we live in the Matrix? watch

Or at least, a version of it. My friends and I were talking at the weekend and they are fairly certain it's likely we are.
Philosopher Nick Bostrom fairly recently presented an argument that demonstrates that the likelihood that we're living in a Matrix-style simulation is almost certain, and there doesn't seem to be an obvious problem with the reasoning. Maybe that was what your friends were convinced by?

The argument goes along the lines of:

    1. Humans, when they become sufficiently technologically advanced, will create computational simulations of themselves
    2. With sufficiently advanced simulations comes the simulation of actual consciousness
    3. When the inhabitants of a simulation reach technological sophistication, they too will create simulations

Given these premises, the number of simulated realities will increase and come to greatly outnumber the only original reality, therefore the chance that we're in the original, non-simulated reality becomes infinitesimally small.

I don't personally think it matters whether the reality we're in is computationally governed or not though. The possibility that it was created by other beings doesn't diminish any aspect of it internally.

I open to the possibility that we might be like an ant colony and there's some type of giant creature that looks down on millions of us in a similar way as we do to insects. I mean an actual biological species not God.
Do you agree with the PM's proposal to cut tuition fees for some courses?
