Thinking your probably right about saving it. Although I rarely splurge on new computer stuff, the clothes and alcohol is MUCH more likely though!!!

I'm gutted your not building your own comp anymore, I'm sure it would have been a pleasure for your boyfriend to show you how.
lol. well i was all up for it, and then i got my accomodation stuff from dundee. it's a £100 connection charge thing for the year and then all the cost of doing my computer. or i could just have a uni one in my room for £185. so i'll just do that for first year (it'll save space in the car as well), i can always build one next summer and i might have to build one for our new house anyway cos i think we're going to have a computer there.

The Oxford Union isn't a students union (we have OUSU for that), it's the debating place in Oxford, costs about £165 for a lifetime membership.

Your mission (and you have no choice but to accept it ) is to build yourself a computer before I complete my degree!!! I have been quite generous with the time so you should be able to build a worthy computer in that time!!! Seriously though, thats a good price for a uni owned computer, I would do the same except I know it would come with XP and I would not be allowed to change it...therefore suicide would be the only option!!!

lol, i'm sure by 4th year i will have built my own computer. i just reckon that this time next year things will be cheaper/faster etc. and my dad is pretty much decided to get a computer for the spain-house and gthe bf would never let me buy a ready-made one.

lol. i actually have a suprising number of guy mates who are comp people, and i would agree most of them are lovely (i got taken out for lunch by one today- any guy who buys me chocolate fudge cake is good in my books). there are some complete geeks though.

and the brilliance of having a bf on a computing course is that there are no girls, genius.

    £200.

edit: i posted that before reading the thread. i am a girl and a compleet lightweight at that ie on results night (june 1st) i was off my face on 4 reefs. i took £100 and was needing my bank card by tuesday night (arrived on sunday) i joined no clubs/societies all year. so all my money was on drink/going out/socialising. i think i spent £150 all week.....so £200 and your safe.

And if your name is at the end of the alphabet, I wouldn't bother. My surname begins with E - i always get their mailshots. My boyfriends begins with Y - he hasn't heard anything from them since he parted with cash for life time membership in 1998....

    Confidence tricksters!

Personally, the PT is great - otherwise, save your money! If you get to know Sal well enough you don't even need to be, or need to be with a member!

Ok people, I've finally sorted my financial situation have found that I can account for every single penny that I will spend at university (well near enough anyway ). Having done this I realised that I have no idea how much Freshers week will actually cost in terms of cold hard cash. Any past students have any experience of the financial cost of Freshers?!? Will I have enough left out of the £450 I have set aside to purchase the fleece jacket I have been longing for?!?
You can't account for every penny you spend, that is a stupid idea.
    Fleece jacket?

I can damn well try my friend....or at least have a rough idea about how much I have to spend on particular items etc...

Can we leave the jacket alone please, I assure you that it does in fact kick some serious ass!!!

I've just recieved a letter from SLC stating the loan I will recieve and I have realised that it says:
'Details of when you will recieve your payment, inculding the amounts, will be included in your Payment Schedule Letter which will be issued within 14 days of your course start date'
To me this suggests that I won't recieve any of my student loan until at least 2 weeks into my first term at university!
Which means that I will somehow have to gather together enough money for Freshers Week and all the rest as it seems that I cannot rely on the student loan for funding during the beginning of the first term!

What it actually means is you'll get your payment schedule letter up to 14 days before the start of term. You take the payment schedule letter along to registration at uni and they'll give you your cheque (though you may get it by BAC), but bear in mind it will take a few days for the cheque to clear.

I thought everyone was getting paid by BACS this year?
From my wonderful temp work I know that a BACS transfer takes 5 working days to clear. It's my understanding that money will hit our accounts say the week after freshers' week, but also that the uni's know this and wont bill for rent etc until the SLC has paid out.

surly it depends on which bank your with and which bank the money is coming from???

last year, my first payment entered my account on the saturday {so it was probably there friday afternoon} before term started on the monday.

so yes, you will have to go freshers week without a student loan.
